We're delighted to announce we will be taking on @scHeerenveen at the @StadiumOfLight on Saturday 27 July at 7pm.

Sunderland AFC will take on SC Heerenveen at the Stadium of Light on Saturday 27 July at 7pm.

The Lads’ final pre-season outing ahead of the 2019-20 campaign will provide the perfect accompaniment to a busy weekend on Wearside, with the Sunderland International Airshow also taking place.

Around two million people are once again expected to visit the city across an exciting weekend, and Jack Ross will be hoping his side can get off to a flyer on home turf ahead of their League One opener against Oxford United one week later.

Sunderland AFC’s managing director, Tony Davison, said: “Having a home friendly the week before the season starts is always the preference from a footballing perspective, but this has been a challenge in recent years with the dates coinciding with Sunderland International Airshow weekend.

“Through our partnership with the city council we have worked to find a solution and have agreed on the optimum time to stage a game, which allows supporters and visitors to the city to enjoy all that the airshow has to offer, and then come along to the game.

“With hundreds of thousands of visitors coming to the city it’s a great weekend for Sunderland and the football club is proud to be part of that.”

The chief executive of Sunderland City Council, Patrick Melia, added: “This looks set to be another great weekend for the city with an international friendly and the Sunderland airshow.

“We’ll be working with the club to make sure the SC Heerenveen fans get a warm welcome to the city and I hope many will decide to stay for the weekend to enjoy our fabulous airshow and all that Sunderland has to offer.”

Heerenveen enjoyed a solid 2018-19 season, finishing 11th in the Eredivisie while also reaching the quarter-finals of the KNVB Cup where they fell to eventual winners Ajax.

‘De Superfriezen’ won the competition in 2009, with their highest Eredivisie position coming in 1999-2000 when they finished as runners-up.

The Dutch side’s last UEFA Europa League appearance came in 2012, and after missing out the Dutch European Play-Offs by just four points last season, they will be hoping to bridge the gap during the upcoming campaign.

Good to finally have info. Not as attractive as the other names put forward and not a Catts testimonial either.

Don't know much about them but they appear unlikely to smash us off the park.

Not excited about it but will go as I'm suffering from withdrawal symptoms.
