Holidaying in Sunderland

I think most of us are, but it could be so so much better with some investment.

Unfortunately, we have a bit of a limited mentality. The North-East is a bit deprived but we have some fantastic coastlines, decent shopping (without being pretentious), usually tolerant, decent people. Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think.

Its always nice to see plenty folk down their for the airshow/other special events.. Other than that, you rarely see a crowd on the seafront.

that said, its nice to stroll along the bench on a sunday morning, chatting to the dog walkers, grab a bacon butty at the cat/dog steps. then head along to Morrisons for opening! ;)

Been pretty busy the last couple of weekends.

I still love heading to the sea front on a day like today, nice walk out with the bairns, grab some chips and just enjoy the view. I don't think the seafront is missing much to be honest.

Who needs a fairground when you have all of the beach man. The fairground is for boring people who dont know how to have fun with their kids on the beach.

To be fair we did have a decent fairground (going back 15-20 years at least), but then it closed down. Now, you only see it when the Airshow is here, and its piss poor at that.

Wasn't there talk of revamping the coast line between Bungalow Cafe (Roker) and Morrisons (Seaaburn) It could do with a lift. The "monument" they called the fountain outside the Marriott was the worst eyesore going when that was put in place. Then it was turned into a giant plant pot

The bus shelter nearby and those underground bogs could do with being pulled down, but then one thinks "is that what makes our coastline" - little things from the past. I think there was talk of the Seaburn Centre being looked at, and the little park behind the Pullman/Lowery is now closed due to vandalism. Council said they wont be reopening anytime soon.

If you ask me (and I know you're not!) the we need to revamp the land next to Morrisons, where the Fair was, and incorporate both the amusements / softplay either side.

Roker Park (the park, not the footy ground!) has been developed recently and that is looking fairly well used again, so thats a start I guess.

roker and seaburn are great areas
sunderland towncentre is a SHITHOLE!

I never really realised how much a shithole it was until I was walking about at sixish the other evening, lovely sunny evening, nothing but shit bars, and take aways, we were trying to get a cuppa waiting for a friend off the metro, not a single cafe!

He's the lad that got the debt collections letter and has the scooter but is going to LA so would not worry about it.

it gives what people want. booze, tabs, clothes, games, dvds, cheap shit. sorted

Doesn't though, I drive past Sunderland to go to Newcastle, I should be going to Sunderland but Newcastle City Centre is better.

The town centre isn't great but if you've been around the country a bit you'll know it's not the worst by a long chalk.

lost count how many away games ive been to that have made sunderland look f***ing mint.
and bear in mind sunderland is a town centre really, not a city centre though it will grow to that in time

Pretty much anything i want i can get in sunderland, maybe except trainers, i just get them online

not bad for its size. compare it to other places of that size and its actually quite good

I don't think he means in that respect, but the fact that every other 3rd shop is derelict, run down, or falling down.

What we need to do is knock now the already poorly used "leisure centre" - if that what you can call it, building an extra extension to "The Bridges" with shops/services we really need. (1st the Ice Rick went - turned into some indoor training facility for SAFC iirc, then the pool went when they built the Aquatic Centre - cant be much left other than Snooker/Pool and 5aside courts etc?)

When I was a little 'un (that's going back 20 years or so, as I can remember the "old" bus route in and out off the bus station via Crowtree road, which is now the likes of Starbucks 02 Store, USC and Debenhams, and the footbridge upto the entrance to the Leisure Centre, and across to the flats.

Whilst has been developed since year blonk (ie: 1990) I still think the current look of the leisure centre takes away what could be a good shopping facility to match that of say, Eldon Square (but not neccesarily the Metrocentre)
