Holidaying abroad this year

It seems to me the new rules have been introduced to protect their marras who invested in these newly set up testing businesses.

By insisting on people buying a 2 day lft they keep needlessly taking money out of travellers pockets. They've only scrapped testing abroad which didn't benefit their pals anyway.

The rest of Europe is not insisting on any such tests for travel.
Ever get the feeling you're being cheated?

imo what they should have done was to allow the nhs test to be used but a scheme whereby it was all done independently of the nhs at another location near hospitals/health centres or wherever. perhaps a set fee with any profits going back into the nhs after any costs. obviously not doing it at any detriment to the nhs and their resources, just as a sideline if you like.
i don't think people would begrudge paying a set fee if the money was going back into it instead of someone who attends the same lodge as the decisionmakers.
apologies for rambling on, just something i have pondered.

Pleased scrapped test before fly back to UK that was the big put off , prob should have kept the pcr test once you’re back simply to track if any new variants

We usually have lamb

You can get really good lamb in Turkey.

Only scrapped for England. Scotland is keeping them - but nothing to stop Scots flying into Newcastle and then going back to Scotlandshire by road or train.

Apart from the price. If you want to go to the canaries during the October school holidays, flying from Newcastle, is at least £1000 more expensive than using Scotlands airports (as they have different holidays I think).

Surely theres loads of people nor actually bothering with the test once theyre home?

Whos enforcing it

We’ve done ours when back like (might as well get me money’s worth off the scamming bastards ) but the day 2 return PCR we just had to do when we got back from Venice we didn’t do until about day 4 and nobody brayed the door down or rang like so you’re right, it’s all a money making sham and nobody would check IMO.

From the horses mouth... UK Gov website

"The Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps, has today (17 September 2021) announced a simplified system for international travel in light of the success of the UK’s domestic vaccine rollout, providing greater stability for industry and passengers.

The current traffic light system will be replaced by a single red list of countries and territories which will continue to be crucial in order to protect public health, and simplified travel measures for arrivals from the rest of the world from Monday 4 October at 4am.

Testing requirements will also be reduced for eligible fully vaccinated travellers, who will no longer need to take a PDT when travelling to England from Monday 4 October 4am.

From the end of October, eligible fully vaccinated passengers and those with an approved vaccine from a select group of non-red countries will be able to replace their day 2 test with a cheaper lateral flow test, reducing the cost of tests on arrival into England. The government wants to introduce this by the end of October, aiming to have it in place for when people return from half-term breaks.

Anyone testing positive will need to isolate and take a confirmatory PCR test, at no additional cost to the traveller, which would be genomically sequenced to help identify new variants.

Testing for unvaccinated passengers from non-red countries will include pre-departure tests, day 2 and day 8 PCR tests. Test to release remains an option to reduce self-isolation period.

From 4 October, England will welcome fully vaccinated travellers from a host of new countries – who will be treated like returning fully vaccinated UK travellers – including 17 countries and territories such as Japan and Singapore, following the success of an existing pilot with the US and Europe."
😊Exactly, it's utter nonsense.
Don't you have to pre buy the day test before you fly back - with ref number to go on the passenger locator form ?

That not that dumb y'know

Anyone travelled back from Spain recently and what type of pre-departure test did you take?

The Gov website states:

Type of test

The test must meet performance standards of ≥97% specificity, ≥80% sensitivity at viral loads above 100,000 copies/ml.

This could include tests such as:

  • a PCR test
  • a LAMP test
  • an antigen test, such as an LFD (lateral flow device) test
You must check with your test provider that the test meets the standards. You may not be able to travel if it does not.

Travel from Spain and its islands

If you are travelling to England from Spain, including the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands (Formentera, Ibiza, Mallorca, Menorca), you are advised to take a PCR type test before travel.
So, they just advise it should be a PCR. So I could actually get an LFD instead?

Just back from Portugal, no one checked our passing locator form at all , passport face down in the slot look in the screen and off you go.

Someone is making Cubic money out of all this.
They are relying on the airlines to do it. I've flew twice with Ryanair and they have needed to see it at check-in both times but not been asked at border for it. Italy and Spain ask for it at border though.
