Looking to go on a long haul winter sun break next January. Need sunshine and a nice hotel but not somewhere where you are just stuck there for 2 weeks as we like to get out and about. Kids coming too.

Does anyone have any recommendations of destinations or places to stay?

Playa del Carmen, Mexico.

Nice little friendly resort and family orientated. Plenty of Mayan ruins in the area if the bairns like history. Xel-Ha is class if they like nature. Loved it there and would go back.

Sounds great, can you recommend a hotel there?

Long haul? Devon, but drive there.

How old are the children?

The one we stayed in was called Sandos Caracol. It was lovely and I've no complaints but it was a five minute taxi ride from the resort. If I went back, I'd stay in the resort centre.
Fab, thanks for the advice, I'll have a look!

Australia and Melbourne suggested above might be a little too long haul for the four year old ??? And your fares are likely going to be the best part of £3500.

Cuba is my favourite place I've been for winter sun (split between Havana and beach resort) (might not suit your children?)
Mexico might work if you find a child friendly hotel.
Cape Verde has good weather at that time of year.

Chichen itza is class too.

RIU group hotels are good

If you can stretch. Palace Mexico is ace

Thank you. Could fancy Cuba actually, is it safe there? Will have a look at Mexico too I think.

For value and quality you would struggle to beat Mexico.

Very good all inclusive but plenty of good value day trips to be had

Best bet would be to get something from TUI and they do a good selection of resorts . Cheapest would be to have all 4 in one room but might be able to get a one bedroom suite for your budget.

I stayed in Barcelo palace which was part of a 5 hotel complex.. brilliant for your age kids but doesn't seem to be carried by too many UK teavel companies

I went there and thought it was amazing. I liked Tulum too.
Hottest place I've ever been to. Never known heat like it.
Amazing place though. Clearly the inspiration to quiddich too.

Went to a ceynote afterwards. A torturer red bull diving venue. Class, but caught a rotten ear infection
