History of a ship

Is there anywhere you can look to find the history of a ship?
My dad was a merchant sailor, and when he docked local. He would always take me on board
Went for a little sail a few times when a ship moved from Harton Staiths to Dunston
As a kid, that was great for me.
I can remember a few of the ships names, and I would like to find the history of them.
Preferably from launch to breaking.
But any kind of history would be good.

Ancestry / Find My Past etc will have records of merchant seamen but as its your dad the records may not be accessible yet as they tend to be locked for certain periods. Worth having a look
