Hillsborough Law reform rejected

See the proposed Hillsborough Law has been rejected by the government.
Multiple aspects to the proposed reform, including equal public funding available to bereaved families as what is available to Police & public authorities.

It would seem whatever form of government is in power they continue to want to slap the victims families in the face, it's been over 6 years since the government commissioned report exonerated the victims from blame, yet not a single police officer, including Duckenfield was convicted during their trials in 2021.....you can bet your last that had 97 police offices died as a result of a disaster caused by the fans then a good amount of people would have done a lot of jail time.
34 years down the line and theyr'e still waiting for justice.

If you read it, it's ridiculous that the families (and all the other groups, Primidus families, contaminated blood families etc etc etc) should be having this fight. It's ridiculous that we don't already have a duty on public officials to tell the truth in inquiries.

The proposals are supposed to cover everyone in public office, so can anyone think of a reason why the Tories wouldn't want to adopt the recommendations?

Specifically scheduled the release for yesterday so it would be buried in the news cycle under Johnson's appearance at the Covid enquiry.

Tory scum.

Labour pledged to adopt the findings in their last manifesto. You would hope Starmer would do the same, but it's far from certain.

I’ve not read anything into it but from what has been said here, you’ll never get countries signing up for such laws that could open the country up to potentially billions in costs. You look behind anything like this and it all boils down to money.

The families were denied legal aid, they could only afford a single legal representative, who was absolutely swamped by the multiples of who represented the police etc.
25 years to get a ruling which exonerated the fans and pointed the finger firmly and squarely at SY Constabulary, specifically Duckenfield, who retired due to ill health with a massive pension and who escaped accountability at the trials brought about by the enquiry.

It's ok for the exchequer to spunk billions on public bodies and covering up their wrong doings (SYC), rewarding the accountable (Duckenfield), yet by the same token denies the tax payer (families) the same liberties with the public purse....it's absolutely mind blowing when you think about it.

The victims of Hillsborough will never get the justice they deserve.
No doubt up and down the country there will be plenty of Scouse haters who spout the "always the victims" line but I would say to them.......how would you feel if it was you.?

Of all of the dreadful injustices, the fact that duckenfield has been a free man ever since is incredible

Police were never going to be held accountable. Even if every family had a WC representing them the police would have served not 1 day in jail. None would have lost jobs and none would have lost pensions.
As a previous poster stated would the same time have elapsed, with the same outcome, had this been Police who died as a result of fan behaviour?
We all know the answer to that.

That's 100% true sadly.
I'd also bet my lot that Duckenfield sleeps very soundly at night and never gives the consequences of his action a second thought.

Not a chance he will. His pledges are worthless, like his 10 leadership pledges. He was elected leader on that basis. Not one remains intact. He is the most dishonest politician we have. He makes Johnson look integrous.

Starmer has said he will do it, if Labour wins the next election.
Hopefully he will stick to that.

It's just that the last Hillsborough Law publicity event was at Conference and both Starmer and Andy Burnham were supposed to turn up, and both slipped it last minute. Burnham went to an awards do in Manchester instead. There's a fear they're distancing themselves from it and it will be quietly dropped.

Probably the funniest accidental comedy ever to appear on the internet.

Well said marra! I had pals who were there that day, thankfully away from the worst of it. Personally, I always thought Hillsborough was a miserable shithole of a ground. I was stood in the Leppings Lane terraces for the 1977 League Cup Final replay, and thought then that it was an accident waiting to happen. After the match, we were due to catch the train home to Liddypool from some wee suburban station that resembled "Petticoat Junction" 20-odd thousand Evertonians milling round this tiny station and not a copper or steward to be seen! Absolute MAYHEM! YEAH!! I KNOW! some of our blokes were stupid and had no self control to simply wait in line for the train....but JEEEZUS! we weren't all cockheads! IF I never see THAT joint again, I'll lose no sleep so I won't!!!

Thatchers boot boys. They could've done anything and get away with it (Orgreave, Hillsborough).

If some reports are to be believed it was Met Police & Military at Orgreave, not SYC
I watched a doco years ago on C4 called The Year Britain Went to War...........it was all about the great strike of 84/85, very good show it was.
