Highest placed manager to get the sack?

The one that always sticks out for me is Ron Saunders sacked as Villa manager just after they won the league. They then went on to win the European Cup.

True but he didn't get us there. Like saying Stokoe got us relegated to the third tier for the first time ever, true but doesn't tell the whole story.

To be fair you Could argue that it does tell the whole story. When he took over we were 3 places clear of the relegation play offs. In the 9 games he was manager we conceded 3 goals in 5 of them - as many in the other 39 league games we played that season. We lost home and away to Bradford conceding 6 in the process. And we conceded 6 in the play offs to a team from the division below (Cascarino scored 5 ffs). Make no mistake, McMenemy got us close to oblivion but Stokoe took us down.

Ancelotti was sacked in the tunnel after Chelsea lost on the final day of the 2010/11 season to Everton. They finished 2nd in the league

Capello and del Bosque both got sacked immediately after winning the league.
Heynckes and Del Bosque got sacked after winning the European Cup!

I know Peter Reid, at Man City, finished 5th, 5th, 9th, and the following season, was sacked after just 4 games of the new sesson.

George Burley was the manager when league leaders Hearts won the first 8 or 9 games of the season about 12 or 13 years ago, including wins over the Weegie boys. The chairman promptly sacked him because he thought the manager was taking the limelight away from him.
