By getting called up to England, expectations were raised for him, and he clearly cannot handle those expectations.

He's a bairn man, do you really expect him to carry the side at his age? Look how long it took a character like Bally to rise to the challenge.
I am amazed at the attitude of so many people on here.
We have a great, local, young talent in our team, who has played almost every minute of every match this season. He has been praised by countless other players and managers and won his first England cap, all within a season or 2 of making his debut. He is far from the finished article but has been our stand out player for large parts of this season, in a constantly changing team and role and often finding himself forced to act as the leader and catalyst on the pitch, whilst still in his teens/early 20s.
He has a poor run of form, which I am sure he is aware of and is working his bollox off in training to improve, and whereas I would have hoped the general attitude would have been supportive, understanding and positive instead people are quick to judge him as being shit, overrated and should be shipped out ASAP before the secret gets out and we have to flog him to Darlington for a fiver in a season or two.
I'm not a mug, I know he isn't Messi, but let's give the guy a chance eh?
this.
and im sure that when he fucks up and he hears everyone moan and sigh that it hurts him more than it would anyone else because hes one of us. he wants to do well and he wants to do it with us, god knows why when people just slate him.
lampard and gerrard werent exactly fantastic when they were 20, not saying he will hit their standard but just saying i bet they were shite for a while.
i hope we do take the money and he does fuck off, then reach his potential and become a very good premiership player and proves everyone wrong.
look at the shite weve had over the years, whitley, whitehead, miller, robinson, hes lightyears ahead of them. people just have short memories. i dont know what people expect of the lad.
sometimes i think because a local lad whos become a sunderland regular and is living the dream we could only ever imagine people get jealous and want any chance they can to slate him
Almost every match, first time he misplaces a pass or over hits a cross there is a growing number of people sitting round us who openly and loudly slate him. You hear the murmur go round the ground. Imagine what that feels like, especially when it seems to be him that gets it more than others.
I will say though that he is not helped by whoever decides that he should still take every corner and free kick. For every 1 decent one there is 5 that sail over the box. Surely there is someone who can take a bit of pressure of the lad and take over for a while!

This sort of comparison to defend players who are being criticised is ridiculous. So as long as the current player is better than shit ex player that is alright? It's nonsense. We could of course turn it round and say he is not as good as Schwartz, Hutchison, Clark etc.
It is pretty clear that most people think he should be dropped (sorry rested) but what worries me is that Steve Bruce can't or wont see it. He couldn't see that Cana was dog shit last season and it took Cana's suspension for Meyler to come in (along with Campbell) and transform the team to finish the season well.
so what was the excuse at the start of the season
I feel a bit sorry for Henderson.
Along with Meyler, Campbell, Turner, etc, he is just one more player who Bruce has managed terribly. Anyone can see that he has needed a rest, and that he has gone backwards since his England debut, but he has played more games than anyone else.
But not least because Bruce has hollowed out the squad until there is nothing there, behind the first XI, he has kept picking him as he gets worse and worse and becomes a scapegoat for the crowd as a local lad at the age of 20, when he should (and has the potential to be) a hero.
To be honest the best thing for him to do may be to leave in the summer for a fresh start.

You mean the 1st part of the season where stats showed he created more goal scoring chances for his team mates than any other player in the Premier League?
You mean the 1st part of the season where he barely gave the ball away (see above as to why the backwards passing bullshit is just that)
Bollocks - who has Bruce got rid of from the Midfield that could have stepped in?
Whitehead? Well thats debateable for a start but he had to be sold to raise funds for Cattermole signing
Leadbitter? Dont be daft
And Cana left us of his own volition.
Jesus Christ, no wonder we dont produce many young players here when they get this level of patience shown.
