Thought it was a restricted performance. I was watching him thinking 'get yourself forward', but he seemed to just sit in the middle and pick up the pieces and move it on. Similar to the U21s.

Really annoying to see how England are in the pitch though. When someone tries a decent ball and i gets cut out or doesnt come off or whatever, you'll see the intended recipitent give a thumbs up or a clap or a nob and offer some encouragement but not with this lot.

They don't encourage each other, they only seem to talk to each other when they're having a moan. They run around with their heads down. Embarrassing. Especially when you have 3 young lads making their debut, Barry and Gerrard offered no support or encouragement in any capacity on the pitch tonite.

Barry in the first half just let Jordan do all the running and pressing. The point of pressing though is that you do it as a team, there's no point otherwise as if everyone isn't pressing then there's always an out ball. Gerrard just meandered around and offered no support to Carroll or the midfield. How deep was Carroll playing considering you could have played 2 midfield players off him?

For the record I though Carroll did alright when given the right service.

Totally agree.

like a rabbit in the headlights and overawed by the occasion, sadly.

rubbish, he did what was asked of him, it's not his fault that a lot of the time the ball sailed over his head to Carroll is it.

He looked comfortable on the ball and made 50 passes in the game. Not a bad debut against a good team....oh yeah he is 20 as well

Yes, but he didn't score and didn't get any assists. He's shite. ;)

Spot on. Henderson was obviously asked to hold with Barry which took away the best aspect of his game which is driving forward and playing attacking passes.

Late on he played a couple of good balls and could have had an assist had Milner made more of the pass from Henderson.

We all know what he can do cos he plays week in week out, but if Capello had wanted a holding midfielder from SAFC he picked the wrong player.

The new lads were, i'm afraid, left to sink. Carroll spent his evening feeding off scraps, Henderson was played out of position so couldn't show his best and Gibbs had no protection.

Lets be positive though. He played a full 90 and is only 20 years old. Give him 5 years and a retired Gerrard and we will hopefully see the potential being realised.

Thought he looked a bit overawed early on, which is only natural given his age and 1st cap.

For me his performance was similar to a fair few we have seen for the club. Holding back, not really getting forward or into space and mostly passing sideways / tight. Without doubt it was under orders, but he didn't help himself by not making much space, so largely ignored with players preferring to hit Gerrard/ Barry / Milner.

I hope we don't play like that against Everton, all he has to do is keep the peformances up in the prem and he will be OK.

Capello still hasn't a clue about a team / formation / style and seems to be caught in the tide with the press constantly fiddling with them, I suspect this will carry on until he is gone.

Why was Gerrard in the first half practically playing up front alongside Carrol?

How many times did we have Gerrard, Carroll, Walcott and Milner ahead of the ball instead of at least 2 of them trying to get back behind the ball?

Where did you get that stat from, fella? Been looking for passing stats all day. Would be very interested to see who made the most passes and who gave the ball away the most - particularly in light of the talk in all the papers being about our lack of ability to retain posession. It was noticeable that most of Hendersons play was one or two touch stuff. If only the rest of them could do the same.
