Noel Blake, in his skin tight strip, must have been a daunting prospect for any young striker. To be fair I think it was at Pompey he properly filled out.

Any team with Mick Harford or Billy Whitehurst in must have a shout. With either of those in the team you just need one or two more hard men and you're there. Like when Sunderland had Mick Harford and Kevin Ball in the same team. Gary Bennett could handle himself too. John Beresford talking about the Portsmouth team he joined had some hard men: Gavin Maguire, Greame Hogg, Noel Blake, Kevin Ball, Paul Hardyman, Mick Kennedy, Martin Kuhl.

Not sure if they were as hard as they liked to make out but the late 90s Wimbledon side had a hard look about them
