Hardly a cert.

Possible

Its possible only because the situation is desperate and we don't have an obvious number 5. He has the confidence and wont be phased and he could smash the WI attack around. However as a likely Ashes starter I cant see it - he will get nothing in his arc to hit over there and has big technical issues against the moving ball and aggressive shot pitched bowling.

Surely an absolute cert for the next England test match?

Absolutely

Please please be proactive the selectors and do it, don't f***ing mess around

Less so at 5, he could be a gun at 5, plus he can handle international cricket. Its worth ago like, he is in the form of his life.

I'm not arguing against Hales. Give it a go - I don't think there are better options out there. I would add though one of the reasons you didn't want JB at 5 was that he was 'too loose' and certainly the same can be argued of Hales. I don't think Hales will be able to get on his front foot and dominate in Aus and I cant see him succeeding over there, however its easy to sit here and be critical and I don't see any better options around. Get him in.

Yeah fair point. What I'd say though is that bairstow is settled and playing well at 7. Not sure he plays the same way at 5

You might be right but sometimes just pick the form horse

He will get more runs than Malan

Maybe I am contradicting myself to be fair I'd just be massively excited with him at 5

He could absolutely destroy the West Indies in this form however the Ashes is a totally different proposition.

Still, we should back in form players and I'd have him and Stoneman in for the next test

I think he has the right character

It's worth the gamble

as much as hales against us the other day was brilliant, it was against a massively rotated team with a lot of young lads bowling

His 218 for Notts also against a crap attack.

I definitely think his game is a lot more suited to the middle order in red ball.

Mind our batting would be very one dimensional cook and a lot of dashers.

As many have said we need a brigadier block in there.

We have players who can be dashers or can bat responsibly.

Stokes has shown he can do both. Ali is a proper batsman too. We know Root can play a long innings, he scores quickly by rotating the strike well with singles and two's. Even Bairstow's innings the other day, the first half of it was responsible batting and in the second half he cut loose.

Although I suggested Hales at 5 and I know he has said he doesn't want to open again I'm not certain he will be right in that position but he's well worth a go imho. (better than Buttler, Malan or Ballance) .

Yeah but its also fair to say he has been in fanastic form recently without even taking into account his knock against us.

Number 5 could turn out to be his postiton in test cricket.

Even though it's clear he has had issues before at test cricket, looking at the other options available imo he should defintely be given another go.

If Hales was 5 you'd possibly have Cook, Hameed and Westley as your top 3, none of them strike me as dashers
