mensah in his last season with us was still miles out infront as our best defender. the OPTA stats showed he had the most interceptions, most successful clearances, highest tackle completion rate.

for some reason his name is now mud because he was set the task of dealing with fletcher and got utterly no help from the other 10 players on the field or the referee, even tho fletcher was being a right dirty shit.

his injuries were his only problem, he performances were not.

ACtually, I personally never got the Mensah love in. Granted, I only watched on tv mostly, being over here, but he always seemed to be on the verge of rugby tackling. It was scary to watch. Always on the edge of giving away a free kick or penalty...liverpool for instance :-(

This place is laughable at the best of times mate.

I think it honestly comes down to 2 things. A complete lack of understanding of football, both on the pitch and as a business. And always looking over their shoulders at the mags.

his reading of the game was excellent. got caught out of position a couple of time but his timing in the tackles was also excellent. his anticipation of play was his strongest point and why he cut so much out.

his bad games were when he was employed to try and man mark some bruiser. he's a sweeper style CB, he excels when playing with a block head who goes and gets battered around whilst he mops up.

he's definitely one of the best CB's we've had in the last few decades. even in bruce's mystery formation setup we still ended up being very good defensively. this was mostly to do with mensah and cana, who was also a lot better than people give him credit for.

If you think we're looking over our shoulders at the mags, you're f***ing thick.

As pig shit, two short planks, and all that jazz.

Spot on. We do need to kick on but it isn't as bad as some/most on here think it is.

Lacking in ambition? I've said it for years and nufc went and proved my point last season. They appointed a decent scout, signed a few good players and are in Europe in the space of 2 years. Meanwhile, we're changing the squad EVERY season spending stupid amounts of money of f***ing rubbish like Craig Gardner (6mil ). 7 (?) years later and we've reached the dizzy heights of 10th.

Any decent player we're linked with is immediately labelled as "too good" by our support.

But what do you expect when you have Mr. Potato Head in charge of things?

I think (more hope) that things will be different now we have an intelligent manager dictating things.

But at the base of it all, we are Sunderland. We will find that all important self destruct button and mash it like it's F5!

exactly, we are sunderland. 6 league titles and 2 fa cups. remember who we are and remind everyone else

I see your point, but 'kicking-on' from 10th to 14th isn't exactly perfect, is it?

We've kicked-on from 16th to 13th in the last three seasons.
And while some like to twist about nowt, commenting on our lack of progress is hardly knee-jerking.

It's just as bad (or worse in my eyes) defending the club blindly and consistently, without any obvious motive to do so.
There's plenty of those folks. Silly bastards.

More worrying for me, is the amount of people on this board, stating that S. Fletcher would be a bad signing. I'd love to no what that opinion is based on

Whilst he's nee Messi, he's also nee Ji.

.

in a few years weve gone from bottom of the championship to pushing for premeirship top 10

So I was wrong in stating we've advanced fron 16th to 13th, in the last three seasons, was I?

"Pushing" :oops:

You're quite an angry chap. To be fair, pushing probably isn't the ideal word, but that's more because 16th - 9th is a very tight bunch and has been for the last 2 seasons, sometimes decided by a simple draw on the last day.

and 10th. this season there was only about 4 points between 10th and 15th. its all one group really and alot of luck goes into where you end in that little group

Based on what?
Stating a few 100% correct facts?

Don't make groundless accusations, thank you.

Who draws it, like?

Stick to facts, man please.
Stop acting so silly.

Mensah was the best defender we've had at the club in about 20 year, how soon you all forget. Many on here were saying how lucky we were to have him, if he wasnt injury prone would be playing for a top club etc etc.

As for Cana he was pretty shite really, had a few good games at the start but there was a reason he couldnt get a game second half of the season.
He mostly ran around in space and pointed a lot.

HAve I pissed on your breakfast in a former life?

WE by virtue of other results finished tenth last season. The season before that, the mags went down by virtue of results going against them. Calm the fuck down man.
