Grinding/rattling noise from wheels

Hit a fairly nasty pothole in Scotland the other day.

On the way back down an occasional grinding noise started coming from one of the wheels on the passenger side. On and off, but it appeared again this morning which is the first time I’ve driven it since Saturday. Brakes are functioning fine but the steering wheel seems to have more play in it when steering left than right.

Likely to be a wheel bearings issue? Getting it in to a mechanic first thing anyway as it doesn’t sound very nice.

Try taking a left hand corner then a right hand corner (with the stereo off).

If you have a knackered wheel bearing you will be able to hear it grinding when the car's weight is on it.

Or turn the stereo up full.

Doesn’t seem to be any pattern relating to the direction I’m turning...

Is the radio still working?

Jack yer car up and grab the wheel and check fer any bearing play.
Take the wheel off. Check there is nothing wedged in the brake disc or touching it.
Could just be the backplate bent into it.

Something wedged up against the brake disk is a possibility - the hole was full of muck and debris which sprayed all over the place. Although wouldn’t that affect braking performance? That all seems to be fine.

It's the play in the wheel that you mentioned which makes it sound like the coil mind.

If yer wheel bearing is shot yer should be able ter feel play in the wheel.
If yer back plate has got bent it could make more noise as yer turn into that side.
You could just bend the plate away with a screwdriver etc.
