regarding Daley, even though he was a multi-eventer (and the GOAT)

hi pb's in the 100m and long jump (arguably his 2 best events) would have got him

bronze in the 100m in 1980, 4th in 1984
5th in the long jump, both 80 and 84

in fact his 100m time in LA meant he ran faster than all 3 brits who ran the 100m proper that year in LA

He was some boy was Daley, remember the meltdown when he whistled along to the national anthem

Got to be Daley Thompson. Dominated one of the toughest events for 5+ years

Not a hint of any 'medical' assistance

I am sure he inspired many

Seb Coe. People only took up the decathlon cos they weren't quite good enough at each event individually ;). Coe's 800 record stood for decades and he was tremendous at both middle distance events.

Although Ive always thought Coe was a twat so maybe Ovett or Thompson after all!

Also a good enough footballer to turn out for Wimbledon reserves.

Hard to choose from Daley Thompson Sebastian Coe Kelly Holmes and Jess Ennis Hill.

Daley and Coe were both sublime athletes, there is also an argument for mo farah

Coe was a graceful athlete who was at the forefront if middle distance for many years. Daley was the master though

I think Coe just edges it for me, probably for holding that 800m record for so long.

With a running career spanning from 1949 to 1992 it has to be Alf Tupper

Interesting.

In the last Olympics a writer in some magazine was saying that the decathlon - at least as it is now - is a bit of a farce as the PBs of the contestants aren't anywhere near those of the individual athletes so the decathketes have become jack of all trades master of none. Which seemingly wasn't the case in DTs era eh?

Sir Roger Bannister

Just heard today his 4 minute mile was beaten just a few weeks later. Never knew that, thought it had stood for a while.
