Grealish - Not Taking a Penalty

I think Grealish needs to button it to be honest, it's not all about him.

I wouldn't have thought it will have gone down too well with either the manager or the other players either.

Tbf him not being picked to take a penalty continues the theme of the manager using him sparingly throughout the tournament. I suspect behind the scenes Grealish is really pissed off about how he has been used especially the match where he was subbed on then off.

Why Southgate would think two players who were not even part of the match plus 19 year old Saka were the answer last night is anyone's guess.

This. He clearly knew who he wanted taking penalties and reflected in the subs. Massive error of judgement having lads barely kicked a ball in 3 hours coming on to take penalty.

Dunno like, Mata and Telles were brought on last minute in the Europa final to take the first two penalties and they scored.

Obviously they were the best penalty takers in training and so he went with them. Not a mistake for me, just unlucky, like all shoot outs really.

Means nowt though does it, the young lads ended up missing. I would just have went with the biggest men, Kane, Maguire, Hendo, then those with massive self belief so Grealish all day long. It's pointless anyway, if me Aunty had balls and all that.

In an alternate timeline Maguire and Henderson stepped up and missed and you'll criticise why we didn't have Rashford, Sancho and Saka step up who were statically our best penalty takers in practice.

Bottom line is the penalty takers weren't decided on a whim but by data and Southgate made a decision what he thought was the most optimal.

Much ado about nothing all this outrage at the lads who didn't take one. GS didn't just choose the takers randomly whilst having his breakfast......they'll have proven themselves in training to be good penalty takers.

Nah, the manager and his coaching staff who know these players and see them in training and analyse their performance are clearly not best placed to decide the kick takers.

Not everyone who comes on last minute for a pen will miss, I just think given the occasion it was a risk that they wouldn't be sharp and calm after soaking it all in and playing under the atmosphere for a bit

Just let it be, the truth was all coming out anyway from Southgate and he could have confirmed it quietly in his next interview in a few weeks or whatever.

What he did was a lack of class, his team-mates who missed are still devastated.
He's said nothing whatsoever to the detriment of Southgate or the penalty takers, but yeah in your opinion he should continue to be crucified by all and sundry for being a coward for the next few weeks FFS. Opinion on this matter does appear to be divided however, you think he has done the wrong thing whereas everyone else in the world thinks he's said/written nothing other than to clear his own name.

FWIW I think Grealish should have responded to people having a pop at him. Why shouldn't he, when the manager has come out and said he takes responsibility, but that doesn't also deal with the hassle the other players are getting over allegedly not standing up to he counted.

Should be a phone in poll. That’s a money maker and entertainment.

Well personally I'd rather have my best penalty takers taking a pen rather than ones not as good who played a good proportion of the match.

Maybe it's a risk letting those who played 120 minutes because they're knackered?

Sky Sports News should shut the fuck up and close their Twtter account, I had the misfortune of sticking it on for 10 minutes the other day and they were reporting from Rome about how unfair it was that we had played most of our games at home.
Well Italy won it so it wasn't that unfair afterall.

Sky News is even worse.

Southgate has been class for England IMO but some of his decisions last night were pathetic, including the penalty line-up. I don't care how good he is in training, a 19 year old who has never taken a pen in his pro career should not have been taking the 5th pen last night.
