Grealish - Not Taking a Penalty

Subs that were too late. Surely if they are the guarantees to take a pen they deserve some time to adjust psychologically and physiologically too the environment?
100% agree, but it's a separate point. What it shows is that they had a set of 5 that were probably the best penalty takers in training over the last few weeks and months. How Southgate went about setting it up is obviously highly questionable.

They were lucky to get on. I'm surprised Mancini didn't tell his team to just run the clock down.

When would the right time be?

Just let it be, the truth was all coming out anyway from Southgate and he could have confirmed it quietly in his next interview in a few weeks or whatever.

What he did was a lack of class, his team-mates who missed are still devastated.

Anyone can miss a penalty mind, no guarantees Grealish would have scored
But if you have a good technique you give yourself a better chance. I’d have no problem if the keeper saved Kane’s for instance, as it was a good penalty and if the keeper makes a better save then fair play. I have a bigger problem with penalties like sakas, or Catts’ in the pizza cup, or Micky grays, etc., where it’s really poor and gives the keeper every chance

Agreed. As I understand it Southgate has people analysing penalty performance, and selects who he thinks is best. I'm not sure I agree that's the best approach but the plus side to it is the manager is fully accountable for it and first thing he says after the game was it was his decision.

Personally would have given Grealish a go because he's a cocky little prick (in a good way) and I reckon he'd have been up to it.
Agree with grealish, he has the right personality to take a penalty as like you say he’s a cocky shit who thinks he’s the best player in the world. Saka looked like he was shitting bricks from the minute he came on

Southgate needs to stop people people doing daft run ups. If you've got time to say "what the hell's that?!" while he's doing the run up, it's too slow

I think I said "what is he doing" three times in Rashford's run up. As you say if you've got time for that there's something wrong. To be fair to him that's his normal style and you could also criticise him for changing it if he'd missed.

Yeah I agree, but the pressure is immense. I reckon they’d have practiced pens plenty of times in training and decided they were the 5 best penalty takers. Really feel sorry for the lad

It's a strange 1. Barring any injuries, you'd think they would have had an idea of the order of penalty takers well in advance based on practice in training.

Based on nothing much my picks would have been:

Kane
Sterling
Grealish
Henderson
Maguire
I read somewhere that Sterling had missed his last 3 penalties and Henderson is nee canny at them. So we were really scraping the barrel with Kane being the only regular penalty taker at his club we had unfortunately.

Said it on another thread, that’s the reason Id have picked takers on personality rather than ability. Henderson, Pickford, Kane, maguire and grealish would have been top of my list for taking them, as they have the best personalities to deal with the pressure - and deal with the tirade of shit they’d get if they did miss too

Did Snacho even touch the ball before taking the pen? I know Rashford took a throw in but as much as I understood the reasoning for the subs giving them more than 90 seconds to get into the frame for what was ahead.

Southgate choose the list and it was the wrong one.
And he’ll have to live with it. It’s football though, one team has to make a wrong decision at some point. There had to be a winner and a loser. I think too many people I’ve seen on twitter etc. seem incapable of understanding that.
