Grealish - Not Taking a Penalty

Doesn't mean he wouldn't have taken the next one, if it had gone to 3 - 3
This. Southgate was clearly seen confirming it with him. The penalty takers may have been decided well before the match, hence Rashford and Sancho being brought on with seconds to go in ET

It's a strange 1. Barring any injuries, you'd think they would have had an idea of the order of penalty takers well in advance based on practice in training.

Based on nothing much my picks would have been:

Kane
Sterling
Grealish
Henderson
Maguire

People are mad thinking the penalty takers are chosen just before the shoot out, this will have been planned weeks and months in advance hence the Sancho and Rashford subs.

I love everyone saying they'd have chosen Maguire now. Not a chance pre shootout would his name be included in a lot of lists.

Subs that were too late. Surely if they are the guarantees to take a pen they deserve some time to adjust psychologically and physiologically too the environment?

Im sure when the camera panned round when Southgate was writing the list he pointed to Grealish and he replied Yeah, yeah I will. Shame on Sky Sports for saying that like.

He’s right to defend himself. He also didn’t have a pop at the manager and agreed with his decision, just highlighted that he wanted to take one too

Agreed. As I understand it Southgate has people analysing penalty performance, and selects who he thinks is best. I'm not sure I agree that's the best approach but the plus side to it is the manager is fully accountable for it and first thing he says after the game was it was his decision.

Personally would have given Grealish a go because he's a cocky little prick (in a good way) and I reckon he'd have been up to it.
