Grealish - Not Taking a Penalty

Two players brought on at the last minute, cold, barely touched the ball, expected to take a high pressure penalty. Its not a coincidence both failed. Managers choice.
Don’t see how people can’t see this. It was an absolutely lifting decision from Southgate. At least give them second half of added time to run the nerves out of their legs. Anyone who’s played football KNOWS you need a few touches to settle your legs down.

Saka taking the fifth penalty will forever remain one of the most baffling decisions of all time. Never once looked like scoring.

He shouldn't have taken one IMO, didn't look right from coming on.

BUT...he volunteered, showed balls and had a go. Unlucky and should not be made a scapegoat for it.

Henderson has missed his last two penalties for England.
Means nowt though does it, the young lads ended up missing. I would just have went with the biggest men, Kane, Maguire, Hendo, then those with massive self belief so Grealish all day long. It's pointless anyway, if me Aunty had balls and all that.

He was desperate to leave or until the last moment possible. There were two opportunities to bring them on whilst they were stood on the sideline, but he held back to the point where they nearly didn't get on at all.

It would have been far too attacking!

What was bizarre was that when they did come on Rashford played right back, despite the fact the Saka was playing as a forward and he's had plenty of Premier League games playing as a full back.

Fully agree. Zero time to adjust to the environment. For all Southgate's opinions and experience with sport science, this is the most baffling decision going.
Agree 100% too, I don't want to knock any of the whole group, they did fecking brilliant and lost by a couple of kicks but talk about putting massive pressure on young shoulders. I will never get why he did it but he's an International manager and I'm not.

oooooooooffffffff, not sure he should be coming out with that like

What's the worst that could happen? Not getting picked by bignose? Being embarrassed by bignose?

Check.
Check.

Anything else?

When the media invent scenarios players have to defend themselves.

It's a tough one. Do you throw your boss under the bus to defend yourself? I'm not sure myself. Southgate has already stated he made the decisions. It should be left there for me.

I would have had him and Hendo for one all day, it's not even about ability at that stage it 's bottle and self belief. Maybe could have even had Pickford put his foot through one before putting the young lads under silly pressure.

a goalie would would break the net. I cant remember the last time I saw a goalie take a penalty

1. Kane
2. Shaw
3. Rashford
4. Maguire/Stones/Henderson if he was still on
5. Grealish

no need to be putting Sancho and Saka in that position at all. Baffling.

I’ve no problem with those who took the penalties last night . They obviously wanted to take one and must have shown in training to be the best at converting them .
Kane and Maguire looked efficient. The other three much less so. Maybe it's the attitude rather than capability?
Faced with their keeper - gently placing wasn't the option and never would be.

He’s right to defend himself. He also didn’t have a pop at the manager and agreed with his decision, just highlighted that he wanted to take one too
This, decision may have taken account of being likely to still be suffering from the studs in the knee and on another night he might have been hitting a shit penalty because of it.

He has defended himself and the manager. I don't see how he has thrown Southgate under the bus. He has just said that he offered to take a penalty and the manager chose other players to take them, he respected the managers decision because he has made good decisions all tournament.

I think people are trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill here.
