Grealish - Not Taking a Penalty

Not the two players brought on to take a pen? No other responsibility, just strike the ball by running up to it and score. Couldn’t fathom the running or score part though. Yep, Southgate to blame.
Brought on just to take a penalty in the final of a major tournament without having kicked a ball in the game. I don’t think any of us can imagine the pressure of that situation so I personally don’t put any blame on Rashford or Sancho.

I’ve no problem with those who took the penalties last night . They obviously wanted to take one and must have shown in training to be the best at converting them .

Two players brought on at the last minute, cold, barely touched the ball, expected to take a high pressure penalty. Its not a coincidence both failed. Managers choice.

Probably could have waited and the gaffer to clarify it at the press conference. I'm sure he would have.

But really I see nothing wrong with that tweet. He's not slagged the boss off.

Its disrespectful the day after other players have missed penno's that put England out IMO

I would have had him and Hendo for one all day, it's not even about ability at that stage it 's bottle and self belief. Maybe could have even had Pickford put his foot through one before putting the young lads under silly pressure.
Always like goalkeepers taking pens as they seem to score but if you were third up and missed not sure it would be the best for your mental state as you back between the sticks.

Well he knows what to do next season. Have nowt to do with sky sports. If the PL or Sky put pressure on Villa then start on them about bullying in his tweets. He’s nowt to loose but his brand awareness.

If they weren’t up for it, they could have said?

He looked very pissed off after the game. Understandable that he maybe felt underused and we lost on penalties if he's volunteered. Credit to him for being professional in what he's said though. Southgate had already explained he chose the penalty takers and I would imagine that was based on practising for this scenario. Unfortunately nerves got the better of young lads which is something you can't account for in one sense but maybe should have been taken into consideration at the time. There is something to be said for being drilled for a situation but then you have the other argument where lads are chosen based on confidence at the actual time.

Grealish is entitled to defend himself there. Seemingly Southgate and the staff entirely made the decision. He’s backed the young uns which is fair enough but I think it was a mistake to have the youngest go last. Let’s hope Saka recovers from it.

“I said I wanted to take one!!!! The gaffer has made so many right decisions through this tournament and he did tonight! But I won’t have people say that I didn’t want to take a peno when I said I will…”

You could see on Grealish's face he wasn't happy and I'd guess that because he wanted to take one.. His last penalty btw was over two years ago.
