Grealish - Not Taking a Penalty

f***ing Sky tweeting that. Wank fest over these lads for 2 weeks then less than a day after we lose the final they are stirring the pot.
I love football but I'm starting to genuinely dislike all the bullshit that surrounds it

Let's face it there is no logic in a high pressure penalty shootout and its a complete lottery. I don't think neither the manager or players deserve criticism tbh.
Spot on, a lotto to decide a months worth of football, players tired of mind and body. It's a crying shame since Pickford saved two but anyone having a twist at the lads who missed is probably better off not supporting England in majors.

I would have had him and Hendo for one all day, it's not even about ability at that stage it 's bottle and self belief. Maybe could have even had Pickford put his foot through one before putting the young lads under silly pressure.
I've just said exactly the same three, elsewhere but you were a day ahead of me.

What we don’t know is whether some players opted out of taking pens when the whistle blew after extra time.Pickfords always said he would be happy to take a pen.In training, others may have proved to be more efficient at taking pens so Pickford didn’t take one. He’s received stick in the press,as have other England regulars or established Premier League players, but until Southgate explains the reasoning for his choices,we’ll never know.

The more I think about it the more I think it was disgraceful to let Saka to that penalty. Not only from Southgate but the more senior players.

Southgate off all people knows the shit that comes with missing a penalty. He's supposed to so woke that he should have realised the ramifications of Saka missing that penalty.

Sterling, Shaw, Stones etc should have stepped up. Team spirit isn't just signing songs when you win. It's putting yourself on the line to help others.

There a large element of truth to this, but not when it comes to the order of takers.

If you think about the angle of Rashford's foot when he strikes the ball and how it turns into being literal centimetres of twist in the foot angle resulting in the direction the ball ends up going, hitting the post shows that how unbelievably close he was to it going in. It isn't like he blasted it into row Z, the smallest of adjustments in his foot and that's in. It's unlucky and I'm sure he'll go on to score lots of penalties.

Sancho's was a shit penalty, easy height and in the middle of the post and the keeper. So if the keeper goes the right way then even a very bad keeper would save it.

The bit which isn't just "a complete lottery" is the order you choose your penalty takers to go in. There is a reason you have a good penalty taker going first, to score and give everyone confidence and make sure you're not immediately chasing. Then equally, look at how many teams choose a very good penalty taker to go last. The last penalty will most often be one of the most important. You either have a scenario of a missed penalty from 1-4 and so the 5th penalty is crucial to not being knocked out, or the 5th penalty could be the winner if your team has already scored 1-4.

Jorginho goes 5th, Ronaldo tries to go 5th, it isn't just because they want the glory, you need an absolute steel heart/head and the ability to score nearly all your penalties to go last comfortably.

Making a 19 year old who has literally never scored a penalty in a proper game before is just mind boggling to me.

oooooooooffffffff, not sure he should be coming out with that like
Yes he should. People are coming to all sorts of conclusions to find scapegoats. There is no evidence to suggest a single player didn’t want to take a penalty. It is ridiculous that any of them are having to justify themselves when they have been brilliant this tournament.

The media and fan angle that they should never have let Saka take a penalty is ridiculous. Saka is getting painted as being untrustworthy because he is young and the others as cowards.

The media and fans should be celebrating their success not putting a downer on it.

Good post, as I said I would have chose the senior lads over the bairns but I'm not and never will manage England. They got to the final as a real group and lost as a group, people picking out those who missed are just harming our future chances and putting shit on the shoulders of bairns who don't deserve it. We lost on pens, everyone needs to get over it and act like the whole group of players and staff, one word "unity".

People need to think on, a lot of these lads could do another 4+ major tournaments, be proud and get behind them.

They were just quoting Roy Keane.

I did not have a problem with Rashford taking a penalty. It was Sancho & Saka it should have been Sterling and Grealish.....We would have one...
Sterling has scored 2/5 penalties in his career. Grealish has missed the only penalty he has ever taken.

Sancho was 3/3 and Saka 0/0 going into the final.

All in all we didn't have many players who are regular penalty takers for their clubs in the squad. So I'm not so sure we would have won if these players took the penalties instead.

I thought Saka looked overawed by the occasion when he came on. Game just bypassed him. Having him step up to take penalty number 5 was mental. I know they do the lists in training etc but surely Southgate could have seen that his head wasn’t in the right place to take one. Such a shame, feel for the lads who missed, hopefully come back stronger.

He definitely did. Showed GS up for his poor decisions. The penalty takers should have already been in place, with the odd tweek for any problems leading upto them.

Is that a good tactic though, I think is the point.

Traditionally its those that fancy it, Southgate seems to have gone with a more scientific method but that has backfired also.

Of course it is, you select your best takers prior. Its like during a game, you know who's gonna take a kick..nothing different, just a increase in numbers.

What's the scientific method?
