actually there was also some German pundit on the radio the other day and they asked him what the big difference was between here and there and he said German clubs do their business early and was sceptical that there was much to be gained from hanging on. The problem we have is that any gain is offset by the recurring pattern of churn, extended bedding in period, terrible starts to the season, loss of confidence and this season quite possibly falling gates. Fair enough if you're shelling out megabucks but for a player like Flint (£4 million?) it seems ultimately a risky way of doing it. Plus we'd shift the unwanted anyway. Granted though, Short has lost all interest.

German clubs don't have the money washing about we have, probably don't have as many of the parasites either as there's less money.

If you want to make things happen sooner over here you have to pay more, even then clubs, agents and players will wait for the best deal. No club wants to sit and wait for it's signings, it's just a fact because of when the window is and clubs come under more pressure as it gets closer.

You don't have to sell some of that to me. But you are severely mistaken if you think all of that doesn't come secondary to lowering costs to us this season. We've made token additions to the squad to get a few bodies in. We're now waiting to see who comes in for our high earners, as realistically if they're here we'll have to use them, we can't replace before they go.

If Grayson had said with a bit of wheeling and dealing we can be competitive then I think that would probably be fair enough. To say we have a competitive budget for this division is misleading and not far off being patronising. We clearly have no money to spend without raising further funds for fees and wages.

Patronising? 24 teams in this league and we will be in the top half of money spent come the end of the transfer window

The budget is the overall budget though, not just for transfer fees in. He's even said last week about not having large transfer funds, moreso wages (which obviously I think will still be limited).

What do you expect him to sign with 20p?
If he was backed properly by our tight arse lender, we could judge him properly, but we can't, can we?

It's not a case of that......Poor judgement.

I'm not happy but I don't blame Grayson unlike you. He's buying players he can afford. Let's wait and see if he can get them playing as a team. Who would you like as manager? Come on and give us a laugh, we could all do with one. This isn't football manager, this is the real world mate!

Not very good ones.......Play the kids, build a team.

Someone who has promotion to the Premiership on his CV.

Next?

Steele and Vaughan makes him part of the blame, McGeady in a couple of months too, not to mention Hugill if he signs....

But you keep happy mate! ;)

Top half? I would consider a competitive budget for a club like ours to be one that would see us pushing for promotion not second tier consolidation.

I don't see how anyone can say we have a competitive budget based upon hypothetical player sales and we certainly won't be in the top half of net spenders this season either.

Its his money. It's owed to short, who just so happens to own the club

It's through his companies but like I have said before he is a business man who bought Sunderland to make a profit when he sold us not to personally bank role us Chelsea / Man City style

Correct! It's called business and you won't spend until you know it's coming in!

So it's impossible to say we have a 'competitive budget' as he doesn't know what he will have yet.

I'm not saying I don't understand your point that we need to sell to buy or the financial sense behind it. I'm saying it's misleading to say we have a competitive budget if that's the recruitment policy that is being employed this summer

Bet spend you are right as we have debt that needs paying off. We will be in the top 1/3 of monies spent. That is automatic and play-offs for the league. That's competitive in my eyes

Not with money brought in by the club which is back to what I said before, he is a business man not a Sunderland fan.
even he's not daft enough to not realise that some investment is required if he's to find a buyer for his much reduced asset - the asset being the team.

get what you're saying - but as I said to the other lad - Short (surely) has to balance his desire to reduce his liability whilst retaining an asset which has some on the field value - and whilst I think Grayson is doing ok he's not a miracle worker.
