On paper maybe. Alex neil is a natural leader. He can probablys 'request' whatever he wants to happen to improve the footballing aspect of the club right now and i doubt it'd be ignored.
well then he and speakman are doing their jobs badly...neil has zero experience of academy management
It's a shame that Leadbitter and Cattermole have seen their immediate future at Boro. Whilst over the last 2 decades, their academy has been very good, has it been substantially better than ours? I don't think it has, in fact until the very late years of Short and under SD, I'd say we've edged ahead of them.

We are crying out for appointments at Academy level and yet Cattermole has gone from coaching the 15s to having a major role in their youth system in the space of 6 months. Leadbitter has obviously got enough about him for them to appoint him now even though he's had no coaching career. Why aren't we doing the same?
the role leadbetter is doing..is it the same one we have mike dodds employed in?
do we have any vacancies at academy coaching level?

Yes, we have plenty of Academy coaching roles available

At every level. Given they've been stripped back to next nothing and taken over by FOL coaches. As you've said, top clubs don't advertise, they recruit.
not at every level...we have an academy manager..thats the top level...and a senior player development coach and a head of academy coaching and an u18 lead coach..and an acdemy goalkeeping coach..
oh and yes academy coaching jobs are frwquently advertosed..there is a website called jobs in football..if you fancy being aston villa u23 manager they are taking applications now

as the club hahs ret\ined its category one status..there is a limit to how much it could ever be stripped back..

Was Cattermole successful with the 15s? Did he get promoted as he was so successful? Or is he seen better with older lads?
We have Dodds in Leadbitter role. If we did the same I'm sure some of our fans be accusing of 'job for the boys' as they have zero experience as coaches.

Why aren't we recruiting? What is going wrong at the academy at the minute?

The point is Boro have done that with Catts. I'd imagine if he was a complete disaster he'd not be getting a promotion would he? Fair enough they've made a role for Leadbitter, the question is why haven't we? He's a Sunderland lad, he's one of us. Why aren't we giving those chances to exactly the same people?

because we want competent people...

I'd guess that they have a local fella as in Liddle in charge and has brought in local coaches and we have Speakman overseeing and he sees it differently? Time will tell if they are good coaches. I hope they are.

Cattermole I'd see would be better personally with older lads than younger lads that's why he's got the 18s.

Remains to be seen doesn't it.

That's exactly what Speakman should've been doing tbf.

Merely from a coaching point of view neither have experience. Our current roles which are taken are by coaches who are experienced.
I get the sentimental side. But I'd rather have experience. Like I said I'm sure if we did some would be accusing it as job for the boys.
Good luck to them. I'll see how they do this season coming.

How do any coaches get experience? Someone has to take a chance on them. Imo we should be doing exactly that, giving young coaches a chance and developing them.

I agree with that. I am not against if we appointed them, totally not. We are doing that on a less scale with the FoL coaches and development years.

Positions they have got at boro are a more prestigious role and we already have those filled? Sure our budget will be less than boros to bring them on along side current coaches.

I know it'll be said but until these lads are given a go, they're not getting experience.

Why have we not had an u23 lead coach for about a year?
