What's the crack with this? Is it right you are well within your rights to request a referral to the consultant of your choice?

Yes you have a right to request a named consultant if being referred by a GP. Won't always get it as the hospital tend to book in to clinics to hit targets, if its a popular consultant they are often overbooked.

Google NHS Choose and Book

Or very quickly invest in private medical cover, with mine you get a magazine of Consultants so you just pick the one you like the look of

I would like to see a consultant to try and get on the waiting list for a minor op, but the doc just keeps refusing to refer me. I've asked 3 times now.

Where can you do this?

Certain clinics are on it from my experience, they want them all on ultimately but it's not always as simple as that.

You have the ability to request a particular consultant or hospital site. It can all be done by the patient themselves, though there is also a helpline.

Used to be called Choose & Book as some have said, had a different name after it was reformatted - e-referrals I think though not 100%.

Where can you do this?

You can only book yourself once the GP does the referral on it. Your GP has to refer, and can put in a named consultant if you ask for one. Like i said earlier though, it is ultimately down to the hospital / booking team whether they book with a named consultant or someone different to hit targets for booking etc.

Once you've been referred, you can either book it in with admin staff at the GP surgery or you get a letter in the post with a website address and log in details and you can do it yourself.

Even if you book with a named consultant, you might not get to see him/her. Over the last year or so, I've had several appointments, had an operation and been discharged from a department and I only saw the named consultant once for a couple of minutes after the op when he popped in to check I was ok! The rest of the time, even though he was in the clinic, I was seen by different registrars or junior doctors.

I'm waiting for a callback today from my GP practice manager (guessing it's not going to happen now) as I've had 6 referrals supposedly sent but haven't been received by the specialist dept. Well, actually, one was received but it was blank. At the end of my tether now as it's been over 5 weeks since I first went in to see the GP!

The waiting time for the dept I need to go see is about 6-8 weeks at the moment!

Last time I did it, the doctor formed his screen round and at picked it together

Fun fact, I used to do the IT for that system. The first time I ever actually saw it was that time in the doctors!

Generally no. You have according to the NHS constitution the right to a referral to a specific consultants team however ultimately you have no control over who you see in clinic or who performs your operation/procedure. Because of the way services are structured we never promise specific clinicians. The only guarantee that is given is that the person you see will be appropriately qualified and experienced.

Sounds like someone isn't doing something right ( wrong address or something) or you are being strung along by the Hosp.

The system is called choose and book iirc. You can basically do it yourself
As if it really works like that. You can never choose a particular consultant on choose and book and usually you're limited between a choice of a couple of hospitals.

Personality transplant?
