Aye, they're expensive - it's a premium item and priced accordingly.

Summat like the HTC Whatever will do broadly the same job, but won't be quite as la-di-da so is a bit more affordable.

That Xperia Arc looks very nice - presume it's not that much cheaper than the iPhone? I used the old Xperia before, it seemed lovely hardware but the interface felt a bit odd, as if they'd spent all their effort making it look pretty rather than making it easy to use. If the new one has more pared back interface then it could be great.

That implies that Apple had announced the iPhone 5 for summer, and they haven't.

I very much doubt there will be an iPhone 5 this year. I can't think if any major improvements they could make given the technology that's out there. Perhaps there'll an iPhone 4S or whatever - a bit faster, a better camera etc., but I think it's much more likely that the next iPhone will be a mid level model with fewer features. That's what they did with the iPods.

Unlikely, its probably around £10 cheaper a month.

Starting to think about getting a smartphone. Battery life, how often I would use the extra features and monthly cost have been putting me off up till now. I quite like my little Nokia but my contracts about to finish so I think I may head over to giffgaff for a few months and see how these new duel core phones pan out. Have to say that the galaxy s2 looks nice, but think I will wait till its been out for a few months in case it has any niggles.

Smartphones are ace like. Just avoid the bog standard BlackBerry.

You know when people start colour coding their replies that the thread has entered the Twilight Zone.

The day I start doing that is the day that I log off forever.

1a) The reason is surely quite simple? They need to be specific to cover their arses, they cannot have a free for all. They say jailbreaking is legal under certain circumstances as it would be idiotic of them to say it is legal to jailbreak IF your sole intention is to then commit piracy....but the fact is that jailbreaking IS LEGAL.

2) I thought (could be wrong and will admit if i am!!) that to install shady Apps on a symbian device you had to mess about with the signing process, either sign it yourself, unsign it (maybe?) or install something to bypass the signature??

So in one sentence you say they're being specific about when jailbreaking is and isn't illegal to cover their arses, and then that jailbreaking is still always legal?? Haway man you're taking the piss now.

I know how to use the search feature, just like you know the most people jailbreak to install free software, or enable features, that they'd otherwise have to pay for. Which, by the DMCA's 6 stipulations, which do not cover that, is illegal jalbreaking.

Signing in Symbian is about verifying the source of the application, not about copy protection (there are 3 or 4 3rd party methods/tools that Symbian developers typically use for that). But if you don't want that security, you (or someone else) can self-sign. I have done that many times, but have never once "hacked" the phone. In any event, only a nutter would claim there is a jailbreaking fad around Symbian like there is around Apple. Symbian has been selling a lot more more phones than Apple forever - how many people have you seen on here asking how to jailbreak their Symbian phone to get warez?
