Gooch (Scapegoat)

Has improved in recent games showing more determination and better touch. The fact that he's been with us during the worst period of our history makes him a sitting duck for the boo boys

Oh but it is true.
Plain to be seen by anyone that can watch a game objectively.

"Failing to beat his man 99% of the time". I remember him getting at least 4 crosses in yesterday. If he was failing to beat his man 99% of the time, then you're saying that he failed to beat his man 396 times yesterday to get those 4 crosses in?

And you say you're being objective?

I was referring to the whole season not one game……but you knew that didn’t you.
*Edit I was referring to his career with us in general, it’s not new his being less than fruitful.

He played better yesterday than in previous games.
The one clear cut chance he had in front of goal ( second half) he turned into a half chance with a heavy touch.
His effort and energy throughout was commendable.
Sadly he lacks the required skill and game awareness at this level.
I think most of us know this. Rather than criticise Gooch, a smashing young lad by the way, rather we should criticise the club, injuries aside, for not finding an adequate replacement.

Feel a bit sorry for him, is being asked to play in 2/3 different positions during a game isn’t going to help.
He is a very frustrating player mind.
Gooch is best in a forward position. Never. comfortable as a back. Team selection needs looking at big style. We are not creating enough crosses for LND and if we do its generally from LG .

He had one of his better games yesterday then was moved unbelievably to right back.

That said he is a very poor footballer and I won't let apologists cloud this under the guise of scapegoating.

He's never lifting any trees after 4 season in league one and someone is first name on the team sheet, he's all huff and puff which is to be honest the bare minimum anyway.

Has no real pace, bad decision making and cannot beat a man. I cringe every time I see him try to knock it slightly to his right only to knock it straight into the defender.

He's poor, it's obvious and if you can't see it you can't be helped.

Had Sunderland not fell through the footballing pyramid he'd have been released from a prem academy and I'm confident in saying he would be playing a level that would shock some on here.

Wow , I posted exactly the same last night and got dogs for it.
In the last 24hrs since yesterdays awful performance , posters on here have castigated every single one of our players including Pritchard who tried his pluck out for us.
I honestly am pissed off with the shit Gooch gets from posters on here, virtually the only forward momentum we had yesterday was through him . Players standing about not offering themselves all afternoon , except for him and Pritchard but numb nuts like phooey are on their keyboards at the final whistle slaughtering Gooch.
Fuck em.

He Was , most definitely.
Again, he was standing in the opposition half hugging the touch line, he never once dropped deep to collect the ball, hardly tracked back, gave the ball away, fell over a couple of times and pointed a lot, second half he was marginally better. The only redeeming factor was he wasn't the worst on the pitch, which for him is some achievement. Oh and by the way, the majority on these boards agree that the lad is simply not good enough, but I notice you and the rest of his fan club always seem to blame me for the lad getting criticism.

Embleton and Neil were awful as well mind and Evans isn’t worthy of the word captain. My biggest gripe with Gooch is that he never ever learns. Decision making is awful and holds on to the ball instead of passing it on

I'm sure if you counted up, he hasn't "failed to beat his man" 396 times this season, let alone in that one match, and that's before you add all the extra 99's for each time he succeeded to beat his man in that same timeframe.

I was on a stats website earlier checking the stats of our players. Gooch had the 5th highest average rating in our squad this season, behind Stewart (obviously), McGeady (who has missed most of the season), O'Nien (who has missed a lot of the season) and Neill (who also hasn't played as many games as Gooch).

The way folks on here go on, you'd think Gooch was bottom of the pile, but week in week out he outperforms almost everyone in the team. Yesterday was no exception. Yet again he was one of our better performers, and probably our actual best performer out of those that started the match. In the first half when the whole team were losing their heads, he kept it together and tracked back to help out those that were flapping.
