Gooch (Scapegoat)

Anyone else think this lad is becoming a bit of a scapegoat?

I know he frustrates at times with his decision making but he can play some good football also when in his correct position.

He has taken on a tough role at right back recently and he is clearly out of his depth in that position, but people need to cut him some slack. This position should have been addressed in January and Gooch shouldn’t be playing there.

Yesterday at the match I saw a shocking ball played to him and before the ball even got near him the fans lost it with him. Gooch ironically trapped the ball and played it back to Doyle in what stopped the ball going out for a throw in to Doncaster and the fans around me looked a bit silly.

Gooch has been no worse than most during this bad spell but nobody else gets as much abuse as this lad.

I don’t think people want him to fail and people are right to expect better but people need to cut him slack.
Works hard never hides being used to plug holes left by inadequate recruitment. Needs praise despite his limitations for doing a big job for the team in roles that clearly don’t suit him.

Serious question, where would you play him, because to me over the years, he has failed at every single position he has played in.

He may be playing in an unfamiliar position at right back, but how do you account for him running down blind alleys, failing to beat his man 99% of the time and basically losing possession the vast majority of times he finds himself in a forward position, these examples are taken from when he plays in his favoured position by the way.

None of that is true.

How do I account for your statement? Confirmation bias.

Yes, he is the scapegoat.

The only defence of him at present is that he's being asked to play multiple positions in a game. The new O'Nien basically.

Having seen many mercenaries over the years in Sunderland shirts I respect the fact Gooch has always been loyal and always given his all. Yes like us all he has his limitations but he came here at a young age and has always tried hard, as many have said, in a multitude of positions.... with little fuss .
Fairly sure will be his last season with us but I hate to see the way he is singled out all the time and constantly slated when it's no way all down to him ( our results). I hope the added competition for places will help him raise his game more regularly, if not I still don't think he deserves a lot of the vitriol directed at him

Gooch is woeful at the minute. He comes across as petulant and seems to have a chip on his shoulder. He also seems to try and do it all himself almost to prove he’s better than he is but then runs into a wall and gets even more stick. I do think he’s just frustrated in himself but it comes across wrong.

He might not be very good but he gives 100% which is why he gets picked. If Keane takes the job he will pick him.

Apart from Pritchard he was our best player yesterday. Not saying much mind. Desperately need to stop pissing about and just leave him on the left wing though.
Wow , I posted exactly the same last night and got dogs for it.
In the last 24hrs since yesterdays awful performance , posters on here have castigated every single one of our players including Pritchard who tried his pluck out for us.
I honestly am pissed off with the shit Gooch gets from posters on here, virtually the only forward momentum we had yesterday was through him . Players standing about not offering themselves all afternoon , except for him and Pritchard but numb nuts like phooey are on their keyboards at the final whistle slaughtering Gooch.
Fuck em.
He really wasn’t
He Was , most definitely.
