Gooch (Scapegoat)

I can’t recall when he hasn’t been. I find it odd that fans attach to a player and no matter what they do, they won’t let it go.

The lad is not a great footballer - he is where he is in League One - but he's far from being the cause of all of our problems he's just one of the many symptoms.

Season after season after season after season the lad has failed to improve under countless coaches/managers. People need to accept that the lad is simply not at the standard we need to go forward as a club.

No. Four years in this league he’s no better than he was at the start.

There was a time he had to play as there was always a chance he’d score even when we he was playing badly, that doesn’t even happen now.

Anyone else think this lad is becoming a bit of a scapegoat?

I know he frustrates at times with his decision making but he can play some good football also when in his correct position.

He has taken on a tough role at right back recently and he is clearly out of his depth in that position, but people need to cut him some slack. This position should have been addressed in January and Gooch shouldn’t be playing there.

Yesterday at the match I saw a shocking ball played to him and before the ball even got near him the fans lost it with him. Gooch ironically trapped the ball and played it back to Doyle in what stopped the ball going out for a throw in to Doncaster and the fans around me looked a bit silly.

Gooch has been no worse than most during this bad spell but nobody else gets as much abuse as this lad.

I don’t think people want him to fail and people are right to expect better but people need to cut him slack.
He not a scapegoat he’s just been getting worse every year - he’s a league 2 footballer at best!

All those slating him will be the types who only demand 100% which he does.
Well I’m pages into the thread and it’s about 50/50 that he doesn’t bother/ does too much, can’t control his emotions, doesn’t care enough/ played awful/ was one of our better players yesterday

He's not the scapegoat, but he is part of the problem. Along with 90% of the squad and management. They lack confidence, desire and ambition, Sunderland has the potential to be a great club but its being run badly on and off the pitch and has been for years. We desperately need someone to come in and sort this. Hopefully the new owner will bring in the right people. If Roy comes in I can see there being fireworks when he sees just how badly things are behind the scenes. But it needs to happen whoever takes over, the journeymen melts and plodders need to go.

Speakman wants a squad that owe him. If KLD is happy going along with that the we are in as much danger under him as all the previous idiots that have bluffed before.

Well it may have benefitted us but how him? Fail to see how playing for a far worse team would be good for him
Would probably help a player’s confidence to not be heavily criticised every game - even when he does play well enough. I do see your point though in terms of football it is a drop in standard and he is playing games and loves it here so has every right to stay.

I refuse to scapegoat Gooch.

But I also refuse to let them let down bastards not be called out.

For me, once they hit a consistent level of ‘not good enough’ performances, they’re all just as bad as each other.

Gooch, Embleton, Evans, Hoffmann, Doyle, Neil, Winchester have all been absolute tripe for weeks now.

As I said yday - we don’t lost 6-0 because of Gooch. We lose 6-0 because of the lot of the underperforming, half-hearted, weak-minded, absent of ability wasters.

When was the last season he consistently played well enough

Probably our Championship season when he stood out above a toothless lot. He has always been frustrating in the sense he can look great and then suddenly look out of his depth. I am not defending his performances, he shouldn’t be starting games. I just think at times the abuse he gets is over the top.

No....he has been appallingly bad for a number of months and I'm /was one of his biggest fans since his youth days. He has developed some really bad habits since breaking into the team all those years ago. I posted just after the season began that he would not be in the starting eleven at the end of the season but injuries may just save him...
