Gooch (Scapegoat)

Exactly this. Everyone was shouting at him as if he single handedly caused us to lose. You point out that others on the pitch that are just as bad and make the same mistakes.

He does get disproportionate stick. Neil, Evans and Embleton spent a good portion of the first half either losing the ball or pointing for it to be passed anywhere other than to them. That’s weak and deserved more criticism than anything Gooch did first half.

That said he’s been poor for a while now and his histrionics don’t help him. His approach to referees is crap and then he frequently loses his head and gives away stupid free kicks when he’s been huffed. That’s not the way to get supporters on side.

He should never have been selected yesterday, 5 days after we tried to send him to Shrewsbury, while players we brought in on loan from Premier League clubs sat on the bench.

But he's not good enough, he's got worse over the years, he has zero awareness, no control over his temperament, and yesterday he was really hiding.

He played poorly yesterday - 2 shots, and 1 chance created is a poor output against the league's worst team (Pritchard created 5 chances, while Clarke created 3 chances in 30 minutes). He used to pop up with the odd good goal every once in a while, he hasn't scored all season.

I'm not scapegoating him because I don't blame yesterday or this season on him, but I really hope he is done here, and that we don't offer him a new contract.

His problem is he tries hard, doesn't tend to hide but his "faults" are so frustrating. His final choice with the ball is often wrong and this just highlights the deficiencies. He did seem petulant at the end but that could be frustration as well. He may also feel that if the link to Shrewsbury was true then he isn't wanted in any case. He is a very frustrating player

He didn’t storm down the tunnel. He was the first player to leave the pitch walking calmly but clearly frustrated. Glad he didn’t appear happy or the old mercury would have exploded on here
Pleased he didn’t storm down the tunnel like the other poster suggested.

I feel sorry for the lad. The worse he's playing, the more he wants to hold on to the ball to do something right, hence he over plays, holds on to the ball for too long and ends up losing it or breaking up an attack.

Don't know if it's just stubbornness, determination to prove his detractors wrong or just a poor footballing brain, but at least the lad never hides, I guess.

I am not excusing it mate. I don’t think he should be starting but who else do we have willing to play right back. There is no excuse from the management to not bring in a right back that they actually trust to play.

I think you are when other players are making the same mistakes yet when Gooch makes the mistakes it is pointed out more aggressively
Oh aye, being singled out for being part of a universal shitshow isnt fair

Also I would like to point out that I do understand why he gets criticism and have no issues with people criticising an out of form player. I just think he is targeted unfairly at times particularly on a match day when others are just as bad.

Anyone else think this lad is becoming a bit of a scapegoat?

I know he frustrates at times with his decision making but he can play some good football also when in his correct position.

He has taken on a tough role at right back recently and he is clearly out of his depth in that position, but people need to cut him some slack. This position should have been addressed in January and Gooch shouldn’t be playing there.

Yesterday at the match I saw a shocking ball played to him and before the ball even got near him the fans lost it with him. Gooch ironically trapped the ball and played it back to Doyle in what stopped the ball going out for a throw in to Doncaster and the fans around me looked a bit silly.

Gooch has been no worse than most during this bad spell but nobody else gets as much abuse as this lad.

I don’t think people want him to fail and people are right to expect better but people need to cut him slack.
The club tried to Peddle him to Shrewsbury last day of the window, what would we of done then had he went? They tried to get rid for a reason, but to play him in the next game after basically saying we don’t want you anymore is absolutely head baffling, I just can’t get my head around some of the decisions that’s been made over these last few months, it’s like we are trying to inflict as much damage to ourselves as possible.

Not a scapegoat at all. League 1 is too high of a level for him. He gets worse with every passing game. We will never get promoted with poor players like him starting every week. Also heard the reason why he turned down Shrewsbury is because he sees himself playing in the championship

The data last summer and in January has obviously revealed that there’s not enough players on the planet available to avoid the necessity of him being square pegged into round holes.
Hes plenty good enough for a top six team in this division when played in his reet position. I think he’d be the first to admit that he hasn’t kicked on from his opening day goal in this division four fuckin years back but SAFC have failed him in that dept as much as he’s failed himself.

He didn’t storm down the tunnel. He was the first player to leave the pitch walking calmly but clearly frustrated. Glad he didn’t appear happy or the old mercury would have exploded on here

Well I suppose it depends on what is interpreted as storming down the tunnel. But he was first off the pitch and went straight down the tunnel. shook few if any hands on the way, didn’t applaud, whipped his shirt off as soon he was in the tunnel. Meanwhile the rest of his team mates, including some young lads, took the heat from the remaining supporters.

That’s not good leadership from a now experienced and long serving player. And he’s in the ‘leadership group’.

At times yesterday it was like he wasn’t concentrating. There were a few times in the first half when he was the obvious pass but was not focusing on the play. Was really frustrated when the keeper was looking to get it out quick and gooch was the only pass and in loads of space but was just jogging away looking at the floor. He is ok in possession but really struggles sometimes when not.
