Central Defender
Anyone else think this lad is becoming a bit of a scapegoat?

I know he frustrates at times with his decision making but he can play some good football also when in his correct position.

He has taken on a tough role at right back recently and he is clearly out of his depth in that position, but people need to cut him some slack. This position should have been addressed in January and Gooch shouldn’t be playing there.

Yesterday at the match I saw a shocking ball played to him and before the ball even got near him the fans lost it with him. Gooch ironically trapped the ball and played it back to Doyle in what stopped the ball going out for a throw in to Doncaster and the fans around me looked a bit silly.

Gooch has been no worse than most during this bad spell but nobody else gets as much abuse as this lad.

I don’t think people want him to fail and people are right to expect better but people need to cut him slack.

He's not a scapegoat

He's just not very good

Aye but he is playing in a position he is really struggling in and he shouldn’t be playing there.

He has his good games in midfield and his bad and there isn’t much consistency and he shouldn’t be starting. He is a good option from the bench though.

He just isn’t very good. Feel it’s a bit unfair on him that he keeps getting played, but it’s more unfair on us that we have to have him in the side. Then again he turned down a move to a level he would be better suited. Hopefully as better players come back from injury / get match fit it will be the last we see of him.

I always find it tediously counter productive that people excuse having shite in the side just because they are in the side. This kind of happy clapping is incredibly detrimental to our goal of being a good team.

He’s woefully out of form, behaves fairly poorly on the park and his departure from the field yesterday was pathetic. He’s meant to be a member of the ‘leadership group’. He left young lads on the park to face unhappy supporters whilst he stormed down the tunnel like a petulant child.
We will never get out of this division as long as he continues to be a regular starter.

I left as soon as the whistle weny so didn’t see him storm down the tunnel. He is woefully out of form I agree but at least he is willing to play right back - I am not sure why Winchester isn’t playing there since he was actually being praised in that position earlier in the season.

I am not excusing it mate. I don’t think he should be starting but who else do we have willing to play right back. There is no excuse from the management to not bring in a right back that they actually trust to play.
You're not being scapegoated when your deficiencies are correctly pointed out.
I think you are when other players are making the same mistakes yet when Gooch makes the mistakes it is pointed out more aggressively

He didn’t storm down the tunnel. He was the first player to leave the pitch walking calmly but clearly frustrated. Glad he didn’t appear happy or the old mercury would have exploded on here
