Any recommendations on what to do and see, so far I've drawn up this list:

Tour of the Bernabeu
Visit the Royal Palace
Take a day trip to Valencia

And for the lass I'm going with:

The Madrid Opera House
Flamengo dancing
Madrid Zoo.

Any more ideas would be welcome.

You do know what you're going to get asked ;)

Assuming you are there for a while (as you are going to Valencia) you should visit

Toledo, Escorial and Segovia. All easy day trips from Madrid. If you go to Segovia find a restaurant doing roast suckling pig (cochinillo).

Have to say I think you'll have a bit of dead time travelling all the way to Valencia from Madrid, better off going to Cordoba and Seville on the AVE. Valencia is great but seems a bit far.

My father-in-law is from Madrid, top place, spent 2 weeks there Christmas and New Year Eve 1999. Spent a lot of time in The Ratedo (sp) the big park, cos we were young and didn't have a lot of money. Went to The Bernabeu of course but because of the Christmas break there was nee footy on.
Sol is a canny night out, loads of decent restuarants there and very picturesque.

Puerta del Sol is a good place to start on a night out. Make sure you visit papa bravas for the patatas bravas. Nearby is Plaza Santa Ana, a very nice square surrounded by good bars, a great place to sit out and drink and eat. There's other areas of Madrid worth visiting like Cueca and Malasana. The area round Plaza Mayor is chock full of good bars, if you can find "Lizarran" go there its a Basque bar and has great tapas (your first is free)

The Park someone was talking about is the Retiro, it's a great place to stroll around on a Sunday morning. It's near the Prado and the Reina Sofia museums.

been to Madrid was ok, went to el classico then spent the rest of the night in a nazi type bar, long story

Spent around 7 hours in an argentinian grill place, was beautiful, near to the government buildings

Was prossies on every corner i remember, we stayed on the gran villa
