God

The conundrum of the universe is way too much for human minds to contemplate so we explain it away in terms of a kind old fella who wants to look after us for ever. Not sure why people get so arsey about it.

There will always be questions we can't answer...even the reasoned hypothesis with evidence to back it up doesn't answer all our questions and likely never will.

He's eternal.
I suppose that's the argument.
there is an argument that out universe sits in an eternal mass of universes that bubble up and the die out. So our universe could be finite within an eternal multiverse.

So no need for someone to start it off.

(I may have got the concept totally wrong someone who knows science better may correct me)

We have explained an awful lot in a few hundred years.

Just raises more questions though mate...some that are not possible to answer, and that's ok.

When religion (all of them) was created they had no means to answer any questions so the idea of someone omnipotent and kind kept them happy. That's ok.

I have no issue with anyone believing in whatever they like. I don't believe in a creator but if I'm wrong it is fairly irrelevant anyway.

The question about the universe was that it started from nothing but God is eternal. the multiverse theory is saying that it didn't start from nothing.

It is interesting and what we have discovered and pondered is miraculous in itself.

Stop being reasonable and sane on the God thread
Religion is a seriously fucked up concept. How any sane individual could get so worked up about what is basically a pretend story is beyond me.
But I think that goes both ways, why get so worked up about what some think is a made up story, just let them get on with it

Love that last line and could be used to refer to so much, the sea, the sky, the wonders of nature, the stars, the Fibanacci (?) Sequence, anything. You're a bloody poet Mr Angstrom

I agree, humans throughout history have egotistically believed that everything must make sense to us to be true or factual and it's nonsense, there are tons of things the human mind can't even visualise.

Visualise 10 marbles, now 100, now 1000, now a million, a trillion, you hit a limit where it's just beyond your brains capabilities, like getting something from nothing or imagining an infinite universe.

It's narcissistic to think that the nature of the universe should be logical to humans.

Human centric. Is that a real world or did I just make it up.
Used to laugh when people said if there was a nuclear war, humans being wiped off the earth and that would be the end of the world. No just the end of humans, hopefully the earth and some things in it would survive.

Because for many of them their beliefs don't just affect their lives, but the lives of others. Ask gay men in Saudi. Or unmarried teenagers who had babies in the 50s. Or any woman who wants an abortion. Or a loving gay couple who despite being together for thirty years couldn't get married, or...

Your logic is impeccable :D

Yep that's true, absolutely spot on. Although I do try to be respectful I can see you are right, maybe I should try being a little less respectful and a bit more challenging to people who hold strict religious views

Gets me stressed out to imagine an eternity of nothing when we die
