God

I've not actually read any religious books at all to be honest, just at a point in life now where I feel there has to be a higher purpose so starting to take an open minded approach to it all.
I agree and wasn't meaning to put you off but I found it hard going at times. The Muslim countries used to be very friendly before the West fucked them up. I know a good few who travelled overland to India in the 1960s and early 1970s. They have a belief that you should treat all strangers with the ultimate resect as that stranger could be Muhammad returned.

Agnostic. Open to God being proven true or false by either side. Will stick with not believing despite being confirmed in catholic church.

There are very few evangelical atheists. Have you ever had a pair of young atheists in suits knock on your door or stop you in the street and ask you to talk about no god ?
In fairness though, any deity sending out door-to-door salesmen needs to get off their fat, lazy arse and get some miracles done.

I am replying to a thread. I've never started a thread about religion and I never bring it up in a pub. A couple of times I've been approached by JW's and I warn them politely and if they persist I argue with them till they run away.
Fair enough.

I’m not sure JWs represent main stream religion but each to their own.

No they don't represent mainstream religion at all but are a cult in which members are indoctrinated to the point of viewing any alternative interpretation as part of Satan. The only other religious group to have ever knocked on my door has been the Mormons but the last time was probably 20 years ago. Strange how both have a group of elite elders based in America. You would think they had enough on their plates in that country.

You will have noticed that it is the material atheists on these threads that are insulting though and need to reduce the debate to a personal level. Also at times they have a strange aversion to pure logic when it suits them. Maybe they prefer logic with emotions (an oxymoron) although logic with emicons would be different I suppose. A sign of 21st Century soundbite debate :D
Or maybe 21st Century schizoid man.

believe, yes or no?
Mam is well into her faith, my sister learned to be Catholic (we're C&E family). I'm atheist, black sheep of the family
As an atheist can I ask your thoughts on say Jimmy Saville ? As someone who believes in God I hope he is burning in hell. An atheist should therefore believe that every evil person that lived there is no consequence when their life ended, If someone did something bad to you or your family are you happy to think when they die you have no solace, that the evil doer will end up in a version of hell, whatever that might be or would you be just happy that they are dead. No right or wrong answer and not trying to change your view just curious.

Where has an atheist had an aversion to logic on this thread?

I'd love it if he was burning in hell, but once you die, that's it, lights out.

Did I say this thread?

But as you're here what is your opinion on this:

No point except that there does appear to be a logical explanation for there being no external creator god without considering any middle ground or probabilities. The argument has a sound tautology.

The other proposal is that the universe came from nothing but absolute nothing would have absolutely no potentialities and therefore could not change. The nothing that preceded the big bang could not have been absolute nothing but a nothing with undefined infinite potentialities. That nothing was unbounded and had no limitations superimposed as the laws of physics had not emerged. Space and time were emergent factors of the universe and not fundamental.

Therefore the universe/reality as we know it could neither have been created by an external god or emerged from absolute nothing. You don't need to be a physicist to consider this but just capable of understanding simple logic.

I keep my options open, there's no way I'm wanting to see fire, brimstone, the devil and Saddam Hussein as I shuffle off into the ether.
Love you god, yeah you x

Do we honestly believe in 2023 that wrongdoers go to hell?, its crackers. What about renouncing all sin? think there's a reason so many criminals turn to religion, last-ditch effort.

What if Hell is a good place for evil people to end up in though? Satan is God's big enemy, and spends all his time trying to tempt people into evil, according to the bible. So why would the devil play along with his hated rival's rules and make life miserable for all the sinners he successfully recruited to the evil side. I reckon Satan would reward the worst sinners by giving them whatever they want for eternity.

If Heaven and Hell do exist there's a good chance that Hell is actually a version of paradise for the most evil people who ever lived to carry on enjoying their debauched atrocities, because God foolishly put Lucifer in charge of it.

So Hitler can give it large with a hot iron up the arse to Himmler? Sounds ok.
