Nee idea. I got a 14v cordless drill from Sainsburys about 18 month back for £4.84. Nee good to use all the time but for little jobs round the house it's fine.

Aye, shattering is a concern like, added to the fact that I've just discovered the tube diameter is 25mm. I'm favouring the idea of cutting a channel into the side and cementing the tube in place.

The object has some family/sentimental significance so don't want to change it.

I'd still be careful, it might also have a steel reinforcing rod through the centre too, they usually do, if you do channel it, hire a little mini grinder and just take it very easy.

Will do. It's a fairly chunky piece, the pedestal is still about 200mm dia at it's narrowest point i.e where the bath sits.

hoo bakerlooline, i presume you're in London?
i've got a long drill bit, about three foot

Nah mate basically living like a pikey at the mo. Home in sunderland, home in Hartlepool and spending most of my working life either in london or overseas,

Cheers though!

Make sure the ornament is level in every way, then get a small teaspoon full of geet strong acid, drop it where you want the hole and sit back and relax.

That's how I would do it anyway.

Make sure you put the teaspoon under to catch the droplet though otherwise it will carry on till Australia.

I reckon it will have some steel work inside mate otherwise the concrete or whatever it's made of would just fracture due to frost, a channel would be your best bet,
the mini grinder is small enough to not worry you using it, if you've never used a angle grinder before, they can have a bit of a kick, the Mini ones don't, run a series of cuts to form the channel , say three or four, then gently tap out the remaining junk, with a sharp cold chisel, don't try to remove it all at once.
