Getting used to losing games again - will the SMB cope?

There will always be those (especially on here) who react to a loss like the season is over.

However, as long as the manner of the coming defeats never reaches the levels of utter capitulation we experienced this past season,I’m sure I will cope.

Another way of looking at it is how many clubs we played in League One who it grates on us to lose to because they're lower league anti-football shithouses and/or barely a fraction of our size and profile. The likes of Lincoln, Doncaster, Fleetwood, Shrewsbury, Gillingham spring to mind.

Don't think there's many of our opponents season who aren't at least on a par with us so psychologically we'll need to be prepared for it. Not many teams that will treat us like their cup final and park the bus either mind.

It will be nice seeing some better players again when we win and hopefully better football when we don't.

I was thinking about this on Saturday. I know(!).

We’re going to lose a lot of games this next season. We’ve grown accustomed to expecting to win at home but we’ll have some very tough opponents and will be fighting to survive.

You'd definitely hope so. A lot of the teams in the Championship are pretty evenly matched, so recruiting even moderately well can put you just that little edge above everyone else.

Whether we have the money to do that at a Championship level though will be the big question, as even mediocre players go for fairly big amounts now. It's a world away from the signings we've made in League 1. I wonder how many will be happy to just survive compared to thinking we should immediately start being fairly safely mid table as we will still be one of the largest clubs in the Championship (on many random quantifiers).

That's changing rapidly. Lots of clubs are looking to reduce their wages massively and are looking over their shoulders at the FFP threshold. Apart from the relegated clubs, there's going to be a lot less money sloshing around. Cardiff have more or less admitted they'll be scrabbling around for loans and frees.

You seem to be mistaking the SMB being your average Sunderland fan. I didn't ask can Sunderland fans cope, I said can the SMB cope.

You know, the message board that has people asking for the manager to be sacked because we're drawing 30 minutes into games. I take it you've followed a match thread on here before?

Superb and so frighteningly true.

The match thread is bi-polar central most match days.

How many of those 80% of points were from draws?

That was the difference in us never gaining automatic promotion especially in the first season.

There will be those happy with 10 points from 10 games but up in arms with 5 defeats and 5 wins in 10.

I'm not sure why people seem to be looking towards next season as a relegation battle. We have an opportunity to recruit for so much more than that.
You are right, but the first order of business for a newly promoted side is just to survive. We have seen Wycombe and Charlton go straight back down and there are some good teams in that division. But, I think our style of football is more suited to the Championship than Wycombe ever was and it should be a case of a few good additions to making the transition, rather than tear down and start again. Charlton was a bit mental off the field.

A lot has been said about Speakman leaving us short in some areas, but the signings we did get were good ones. I hope Neil has listed the areas and type of players he wants to fill, and Speakman is already making initial contacts or looking at people for those areas. The two together have the potential to build a balanced squad of young quality. Do that and we should be comfortably mid-table. I don't think we have enough for promotion.

Since we've been in league one we have lost on average about 9 games per season.

SeasonGames Lost
18/195
19/209
20/219
21/2210

In that time we've played 174 league games, which means we've lost 35 times or 20% of all of our games over 4 seasons. To put it another way, we've gained points in 80% of our games.

To put this into perspecitive, the team that finished 10th in the Championship this season lost 15 times, once you get down to 17th in the Championship you start to hit around 20+ loses

In theory, we'll be losing in matches where it could be much more even between the two sides and could actually be 'good quality' games of football, but I do wonder if this place will cope in going from hearing the whistle at the end of the game and having an 80% chance of getting at least a point, compared to around maybe 20-30%.
Where you been the last 60 years.
