Getting someone else’s job

I’m in a dilemma.

I have been offered a promotion in my company but it’s to replace someone and they will be offered my job (demotion). It’s not secret he is struggling in the role, but I don’t think they’ve spoken to him about wanting to demote him.

He’s not in my team but we work along side each other, so he won’t be reporting to me but we have direct links daily. The offer come out of the blue as I was happy doing what I’m doing. However since they put the idea in my head I’m very interested.

I feel like a piece of shit because it feels slimy but on the other hand he’s not performing and if not me it’ll be someone else.

What would you do?

Is it more money? I’m guessing it is

look after number 1 and take the job, you might never get the opportunity again

Is that true?
Happened to a client I used to do some work for. Their manager was hopeless and after a while they put him in charge of meaningless tasks, but couldn’t reduce his wages as he’d had a signed contract i think. Something like that anyway, 100% they couldn’t reduce his money though.

What happens if you refuse, and they parachute someone else in over your head, sack you for lacking ambition and give the incompetent your job?

I’d hazard a guess that if you don’t accept the role he’ll still be demoted so what difference does it make if you accept it?
That’s what is the likely outcome. It’s just gonna be really awkward (for him)

Good point, at least I’m freeing up a job for him

Complete no brainer innit!!! If you're good enough for a promotion it's not your fault who you're replacing. If they were up to standard then the job wouldn't be available.
