Genuinely one of the most sad/depressing things I’ve heard in years

Appalling.

Players made to train alone, a decision taken over the head of the U23s coach, because they wouldn’t accept a miserly payoff in the summer. Lads that have been at SAFC since the age of 8, treated like crap.

Another shameful episode in the recent history of Sunderland AFC.

Yeah. Just read it too. Doesn't surprise me, like. Fair amount of what it reports is not a particular problem with us, more the norm for how young players are treated throughout the game. There are exceptions, like, but they don't get a great deal.

The penny-pinching with Hartlepool is f***ing shocking, mind.

These allegations should be put to the club for comment.

Managed to answer its own question in the first sentence.

"It may have produced two Jordans worth tens of millions of pounds, but is the Academy of Light really fit for purpose?"

Not every player that comes through is a superstar. They have a duty of care, particularly when these lads have been there since the age of eight, and making it difficult for them to move on/gain experience is just mental

Tommy Robson could have excelled for us this season if we let him go to Barnsley. That whole peice was incredibly frustrating to read, if you didn't know any better you would say the club hierarchy deliberately and systematically want us to fail.

Systematic indifference towards young players is not new for Safc - nor is it particular to us. There remains a culture of concentrating on the first team at the expense of young lads - it was particularly evident under Moyes where lads were retained on the never never just in case they were needed to fill a seat on the coach (with virtually no intention of letting them get on the pitch). Have things improved since Grayson arrived? Not massively. We still have a first team squad that is too big and don't turn to young players for fear of what might happen.

The thing with Robson is sadly part of the game. All clubs will happily abandon a previously rated product if there's a seemingly better option a year or two behind him. And whats happening to Robson will happen to Hume next and Mumba following that - until the club puts limits on how many senior players a manager can have. The fans will need to play their part too. Too often the talk on here is about more senior cover being needed. In the moment, too few of us care about the youth side of things - preferring money to be spent and senior players to be brought in.

This is something that worries me.. if and when we drop into the 3rd tier does Rodwell still get his 70k a week? do the rest of the high earner still get their full salary? it will be the end of the club..
