GDPR and message boards

It’s more about how data is stored and used that is being tightened.

The opt-in will mean they’ll probably need to ask if we opt-in at some point. Other than that not much unless there is some sort of security breach.

I can see how it applies to a business that provides a service but interested if there are any issues attached to a message board that only really holds an ip address/email.

As this board and most/all others are opt in, there shouldn't be too much if anything to change, unless the minimal info being held is passed on to third parties.

They hold personal information about you so will need to ask for you to opt in I’d assume.

Yeah but that's all. What they need to be more vigilant of is the sharing of personal data within the public space. That won't affect us though, as long as everyone uses common sense. Just need to be very careful when sharing images etc. If they have any visible data in the background for instance.

With the upcoming implementation of GDPR, does anyone know what impact, if any, it will have on message boards such as the SMB?

Key Changes with the General Data Protection Regulation

No huge changes on the board itself. Everything is opt in, we only send transactional emails not marketing ones and we don't use a third-party to send them. The server is located within the EU. The personally identifiable info we hold is your email address, date of birth and a short history of your IP addresses and the logon/session cookies. Most of this was covered by the existing data protection legislation. Posts themselves aren't covered by any "right to forget" unless they also contain personally identifiable information (like your real name - and our registration form always has stated not to use real names as your userid).

The only area I am still trying to get clarified is the analytical data we share (eg we use Google Analytics to keep stats about how many people visit the site and which pages they visit - we don't see personally identifiable data, but obviously Google do). We also use Quantcast to gather stats to encourage advertisers to target the site and similar applies - we may not be able to use these without users permission (which would be impossible to get). But removal of this from the site would not impact you as users - still awaiting clarification statements from Google/Quantcast on their positions.

Contributors information isn't retained by us (apart from the fact that you are a contributor and the end date) as that is all processed by paypal and you enter the details on their site - we do get an email from paypal, but assuming the transaction has gone through okay, that is deleted.

What is likely to be a big hit is the advertising revenue which obviously keeps this place running, but only time will tell on that. The big winners are likely to be Google and Facebook as they sell their own adverts and you are normally logged on (so they know all about you and can target the ads) when you visit them.

Most ads we currently see on here are targeted at you as individuals as you are tracked around the web rather than targeted at the site itself (not many people want to advertise on football message boards). But advertisers will soon only be able to track you if you opt in (and who will do that!).

Roger has to tell us his real name
