Fantastic start to his test career. Obviously the average will come down. He keeps things very simple, only plays the shots he knows he's good and doesn't do anything daft. Of course teams will start finding weaknesses sooner or later, but the lad has talent, and a good temperament.

Not a one day batsmen at all though

The jury is still out - home series v Sri Lanka and India and an away series v West Indies reserves is just about the easiest start he could have wished for. No reason why he can't prove to be a good player, but we won't have any real idea until he's faced some decent bowling this summer. He will also need to show that he's got a second gear.

trott managed a decent career without one.

Trott had Strauss batting before him, and Pietersen after him. England could afford for him to crawl along.

ballance should have lyth or hales batting before him before long and with the likes of stokes and buttler to come...

If England go that way then fair enough. I think that would be too aggressive a selection for England though.

trott is not a long term option as an opener. he should never have been picked as an opener.

i agree that england are horrifically conservative in their selections but realistically who else can they pick to open?

He has faced 3 of the test playing nations, it isn't only runs against Australia that count mate, you do realise this?

Also he needs to show he hasn't got a second gear? That is one thing he 100% has shown, and what he has been praised for by every pundit. Were you not watching last summer? he starts off slowly but then clicks through the gears the more time he spends in the middle.

West Indies reserves?

It really is pathetic the level of negativity you show

Good to see KP get another failure today, Jessie Ryder wasn't it? Where he does fit in the pecking order of international bowlers.

Ballance strike rate is fine, he doesn't need to bat any faster at all.

was just wondering how many of you still want him dropped from the test team after his shocking one day performances?

Averages 68 in test cricket.
Whilst unsustainable that's the second best ever

Mate, runs Vs India, Sri Lanka and the West Indies don't count remember

Lyth surely?

you've misunderstood me, i said ballance should have lyth or hales batting before him before long and was replying to sweeper

You are 100% right. England's top order at the moment is incredibly bland. The options are there to change that but they seem hell bent on not taking them.

One is england's second all time leading run scorer

the other averages 67 and is one of the fastest ever to 1000 test runs

Runs against everyone "count", but surely even you know that some come cheaper than others. In the context of test cricket, India and Sri Lanka at home are easy runs. Had he scored those runs against those sides in the subcontinent, they would be considerably more impressive.

India, Sri Lanka and West Indies (even when they actually field a full side) are the lowest ranked of the proper test playing nations. If he didn't have a high average after those three series it would have to set some serious alarm bells ringing.

He will have the chance to really put a marker down this summer, when he faces some decent bowling. I genuinely hope he does the business but I would not be putting any money on it just yet.

Weapons grade bullshit. On more than one occasion in this series he has inexplicably gone along at less than 0.40. This in dominant match positions against a shocking attack on incredibly flat pitches. If he had an extra gear this was by far the most obvious time to use it.

Yes - most of West Indies' best players are not playing in this series, and the lesser players who take their place in those circumstances - the reserves - are playing instead. That is just a fact.

Nobody has mentioned KP on this thread. However, it's good to see that his class and his many, many thousands of top level runs have placed him at the forefront of even your mind. "Another failure" is also a bit of a stretch; he's only played three first class innings this season and averages 51. I'd also wager that he (and the majority of other batsmen facing LVCC bowlers in English early-season conditions) are being put through a considerably sterner examination than the England test team have over the past couple of weeks on those Caribbean featherbeds.

Second? Who could possibly have more?
