Gaming PCs

My 13yo is man keen on Fortnite and is saving up to buy a gaming PC to replace his xbox
He seems to think £700-800 will do it and plans to build it himself(!)

Has anyone experience of this? Is his ball park figure realistic? Any tips?

You can spend less to play Fortnight at ridiculous levels.

I recently got this as my WFH PC (same reason, the kids play fortnight and that and I want my Xbox back) and I'm genuinely impressed with it, been playing GTA V and Skyrim on high graphics with no issues whatsoever - PC SPECIALIST Tornado R3 Gaming PC - AMD Ryzen 3, GTX 1650, 1 TB HDD & 256 GB SSD

I know you can get stuff for cheaper but I'm too lazy to build it myself / shop around and I'm impatient. It's also worth noting that back in the day building it yourself made a huge diference to the price but that gap is smaller than ever before.

PS - I do not work for Currys

Can't go wrong with PCspecialist built PCs like. Can buy direct from them and customise the full build.

You can probably get a comprable priced pc pre built, maybe even cheaper these days but building it is half the fun and would be a great learning experience for him i think.

paying £650 to play fortnite now, in 6 months he might want to play something else and that will struggle to run it.

Pretty weak system to be honest, can build allot better spec for similar money.

Processor wise for gaming you want at least a ryzen 3600, b450mb

Its a good time to build or buy a computer to be honest, nvidia have just unveiled their new generation of graphics cards so old stock is being sold off, amd have a new generation of CPU and GPU coming out also.

There has been a shortage of power supplies recently, they seem to be in fairly limited supply and increased in price.

Keep an eye on hot uk deals

This is a bargain CPU and motherboard

There are plenty of youtube tutorials showing you how to put them together yourself if you decide to go down that route.

This is allot higher spec for £840

Would play top end games and get some good longetivity.
you can buy a windows key from ebay that will save you a fair few quid, just look for a seller that has sold a decent volume and has feedback.

With gpu it's better but more expensive.

No gpu so cheaper but will still run a lot of games to a decent level.
I'd upgrade the ram in both of those to 16gb at 3200mhz

Check the PSUs in them deals before buying mate

I was building PCs by that age. Its a good idea, yeah.

One thing about self-built PCs is that they're usually far more upgradeable, so have a longer life.

not just that, learning what is going on is not bad knowledge to have. I built my first on under supervision at about that age.

I've got serious bad history with PCSpecialist builds.

Bought a £2k rig on finance, GPU card wasn't fitted in properly, USB ports wasn't fitted properly. Told them to rip up the contract and hand me deposit back.

Mine seems to be fine.

Experience was horrendous like. Spending that much money and didn't even connect the USB ports and card, and they had the cheek to deny any responsibility.

The big firms have a notorious reputation of using 2nd hand parts to cut costs too. I've always used Scan for my pc parts so I went back to them, they sponsor esports tournaments which is a +1

Scan are well dodgy buyer beware.

I bought the insurance for a motherboard just because its probably the most fragile part after the CPU. Unboxed it, fitted it and it didnt work. Sent it back and they tried to say Id scratched it and water damaged it. Because I paid for the insurance they replaced it but if I hadnt I reckon it would have been a long drawn out process.

Falcon may not be the cheapest but the lads in there are spot on, never had any issues.
