Looking at getting a new desktop machine for online gaming as I fancy a new one for the winter months.

Had two Alienware laptops and had bad experiences with both, first one overheated all the time and the second one's display threw its hand in after less than a year. f***ing shite.

Any recommendations? I heard Rock are quite good. Budget £1,500-2000

Well laptops and gaming don't really mix man

Very healthy budget that. Your main consideration should be whether you're going to buy 2 GPU's or 1 then build a system around the cards, the rest will take care of itself..oh and go AMD for the CPU, Intel are overpriced.

I just had the laptops seeing as I worked away and needed a bit of entertainment on the road. They are canny for mid-level games like but struggle a bit online and that.

Not sure about building my own, I wouldn't trust myself to be honest, rather get a professional to do it properly and to make it last for that kind of cash.

How easy is it to build your own?

Unless you intend playing stuff like Crysis on a 26” plus monitor I reckon a grand would be more than enough for a decent spec

£1500 should get you an i7, 8gigs of RAM and a couple of 5870’s in Crossfire, plus mebbes a SSD and a shitload of storage.

I used a shop on ebay for mine last year, quality and service spot on and cheaper than some of the custom pc building websites out there.

I bought my last one 2 years ago from scan.co.uk and its been great. Totally capable, even now, of playing anything I put on it on max settings.

I chose the spec and had it delivered in a couple of weeks. If you're not happy building it yourself this is the way to go.

Multi-GPU's are tremendous if you're playing at high resolutions, and if you're going the multi-GPU route you should also go with an Intel i7 based system.

Pants advice mostly.

This site http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?groupid=43&catid=1270 are an enthusiasts site and as such can be slightly more expensive but you wont find any shit gear on there and the systems are bloody good "branded" components.

I heard a few bad things about them when I was shopping around. Novatech seemed to come highly recommended but were quite pricey.

The one I used was spot on for me, very good feedback on ebay anarl but each to their own.

Overclockers have went right downhill...I had a fair problems with them when I built my own system a few months ago. The site is decent for reference tho, have a look at the specs then find the components from better suppliers.

There's a site called (I think) PC Specialist or something like that which has a very good customisation section. I used that to get an idea of a decent build (along with advice from the Novatech Forum) then went to Easy pc on ebay and customised one of his standard ones a little. More than happy with the price I paid and the quality of the parts.

 Done that for years. Never ordered owt off them but used their customisation tool to get a rough guide at prices loads of times. Their prices don't tend to be too far from the price of the individual components either so for those not confident enough with self-builds, they're worth a shot.

Their cases used to put me off, never really liked the look of them but haven't checked their site in ages so it may have changed now.

I got a rock three years ago, similar than you I am away from home most of the time so wanted somthing decent. I think the company got took over since I got mine and the range seems smaller now.

They are decent machines but pretty noisy and really heavy so a pain on the bi weekly commute across London I do when coming back up north.

Just having anebb round the rock forums and looks like there are some new models coming out in the next couple of months with better updated specs than the current ones.

Bermp.

Right narrowed it down to either a Cyberpower or a Chillblast (desktop)

Budget is only £1000 now seeing as the car decided it needed a new cambelt over the winter break

Chillblast seem cheaper and you get a monitor included in the price, but I like the idea of Cyberpower being in team valley incase I have any problems with the machine...

Unless anyone else has any recommendations?
