Gambling in children

Every PL match advert break is wick with the likes of BET 365, PaddyPower, Willy Hills and Ladbroke ads.

Unfortunately this falls into the same category as drink. It’s legal and lots of people like a drink without having any serious problems and by the same token a lot of people get pleasure from having a punt without losing their wages.

Not sure how you can legislate for addiction.

The option to purchase certainly does. The amount of children spending real money on it is shocking. Micro transactions shouldn't exist when parents have already spent North of 50 quid as it is.

You only need to go on YouTube to see people spending £1000's on coins for packs. Guess that's where pocket money goes.

Wish I'd got that much pocket money

The number of children with gambling problems has quadrupled in two years. Some as young as 11! Gaming 'loot boxes' are one thing being blamed for the rise in numbers.

Number of child gamblers quadruples

Is it parents to blame or the sheer number of ads on social media and other platforms that make gambling so easy?
Sheer number of games they play that include microtransactions amongst other add ons. My little brother spent 30 quid once on extra outfits in a video game and he didn't even realise, they make you put your parents card data in for something you actually want to buy like xbox live or an actual game then its saved. He thought he was spending in game money but it was actually real.

Fast forward to mobile games where you can spin a wheel or randomiser to get a loot crate, you want another spin it'll cost you 30 in game coins... you want more in game coins it'll cost you actual money.

It's easy how it happens.

I've tried raising the stakes before, but I've never been able to up the ante with an actual child.
Casinos tend to frown when you stick a bairn on the roulette table

Mayor of Casterbridge lost his wife and that was in fictional West Country in early 19th Century. Nothing new here.

Do parents not look at their bank statements any more?

No way I'd let my kids spend so much as a fiver on in-app purchases without my say-so. I'd sharp know about it if they did, and it would be stopped there and then.

The figures are nonsense - worthless

Look at the sample

The report was based on an Ipsos Mori study of 2,865 11 to 16-year-olds carried out between February and July.

It's ridiculous how much they'll make from people buying packs that aren't even real. It doesn't help that every time a player gets a 'special card' he'll be putting it all over his social media for kids to see and then want to have. When I first played in 2011 there was only one type of special card which was a TOTW. Now there must be 30 or 40 different types a year and it's just so they can get more money.

Buying packs for Fifa 19 Ultimate Team could soon be illegal

I definitely think loot boxes have a massive part to play in the rise of addiction.
