Fruit Machines

The rush of a tenner bet on a acca over a number of hours is entirely different to someone getting a dopamine hit for a brief second.

Feeling the need to chase the rush on a habitual basis, minute after minute until all your money has gone is not in any way the same as putting on a few quid and waiting for the scores to come in a few hours later only to rip up your coupon and not think about it again for a week.

So whilst the word "rush" might be the same, the context is very different

I think places like LV are slightly different, its what you do there. Even I've blown £50 in Atlantic City. You don't expect to win and it would be a massive surprise if you did.

Never played one. Wouldn’t know what to do.
 This. I've obviously seen them in loads of pubs. I've seen loads of people pressing all the git buttons and stuff. I think very basic fruit machines I could roughly get (need to get three in a row, can hold a couple if you get two that match etc) but fuck me, some of these machines in pubs look complicated as fuck with no instructions so, probably wisely, I've just left them. I like the machines with quiz games like deal or no deal on, I can understand them and at least get a bit of fun out of them, but anything more complicated than that and I'm fucked

I had certain mates who I'm sure thought the measure of masculinity was being good at playing on the nudgies in pubs.

I used to play football with a lad who’d quite regularly put his days drinking money in a bandit in the first pub, absolute idiot.

Not been a fan myself, had a mate who loved them. By proxy I learned how a few of them worked by watching him.

I’ve chucked a few quid in on occasion and won enough to pay for the night out or something.

Never dropped a jacky sadly.

In Vegas playing the slots is a good way to get cheap drinks. They say they are free but the way we look at is if we put say 30 dollars into a machine and catch the cocktail waitress eye she will give the 2 of us a " free " drink. Tip the waitress 1 dollar and on her next round she comes to us. While playing minimum stake and having the occasional win we can get 4 or 5 drinks each. so that costs 34 or 35 dollars, the same drinks at the bar would come in at more than 60 dollars, over a week in Vegas it comes in at a canny little saving. We both smoke so we can sit and have a drink and a smoke at the same time. Not always we do the initial stake and we have walked away slightly up on our initial stake so the drinks were free, but that didn't happen often.

This. I’ve been to Vegas a lot and I’ve never cared about losing a few hundred bucks because I’ve put money aside to lose.
At a casino or bookies if I lost a couple of hundred I’d be in tears

Because you might win?

I don’t understand this logic. It’s true that the machine will make more than it pays out, it’s just a question of hitting it at the right time.
The whole premise behind the betting industry is that the punter doesn't win. Over a long enough time frame the house always wins. Ergo the punter always loses. There'll be very few people in this world that are genuinely up money from nudgies.

20 years ago when at sixth form I used to bunk off a lesson on a Wednesday at 11am. A bandit in the bowling alley at Durham used to roll in jackpot after jackpot until it ran out of tokens (wins over £4 were tokens). Every Wednesday at that time. Usually picked up about £80 worth of tokens from that and just go round the others using them up and collecting anything up to £4. £40 minimum every week. No part time job needed. Went on for about 6 months until they clocked on and fixed it. Other than that, I stick to matched betting.

I know a guy who plays the slot machines in bookies, now and again he gets information about errors and bugs in the programming of them, packs his bags and tours the country playing them for a month straight, 14 hour days etc, makes about 20k a week! ... inevitably when he's finished up back home he'll lose it all again through gambling.

Seems just pure luck to me would find them boring, someone could have won on it 10 minutes before you and you would have no idea, how can you beat a machine programmed to beat you!

At least with other betting yes lot of luck with that too, but you have the enjoyment of picking a horse, watching a football/cricket match with a bet on, rather than just looking at a machine!
