The majority of Islamic scholars say the niqab is not obligatory in Islam and is merely a custom that dates back to tribal nomadic societies living in the Arabian desert and other dusty and dry areas before Islam began, in order to provide protection against dust and sand.[5] But the issue has continued to arouse debate between Muslim scholars and jurists both past and present concerning whether it is fard (obligatory), mustahabb (loved to do), or forbidden for a woman to wear niqāb.[6] Many Salafi Muslims believe that a woman's awrah in front of unrelated men is her entire body including her face and hands.
