France bans the Burka

Because it is how we identify each other. It's tacit in that it's just an understood and accepted part of culture and social norm that you would not cover your face in public. People don't walk around in balaclavas and if they did they would be lifted.

Do we need a ban? Probably not no. But it's still disrespecting British culture. Wherever I travel I learn about their customs and culture and try to follow and respect that. I would expect people to do the same coming here.

That assumes Britain is a monoculture, and it is not.

Eye contact is social norm - is wearing sunglasses in conversation disrespectful to British culture? Wearing hats indoors? Turbans? Yarmulkes?

Britain is, and always has been, a tolerant polyculture. Burqas are part of that. You're entitled not to like then - I don't - but to suggest that they have no place in Britain is very unBritish. Your wife will probably have to cover up if you went to a Muslim country. I happen to think it's a great think that people don't have to hide their own culture when they come to ours.

As long as people pay taxes and learn the language, I couldn't care less if I can see their nose or not.

And our resident lentil muncher is suddenly supporting women's oppression?

No. I was alluding to the fact that the muzzie haters are also the sort who generally bang on about 'snakes with tits', how women are shit drivers, etc etc. But suddenly, there's a chance to do a bit of muzzie bashing and they're all feminists.

student rioters and the Hamburglar

And police officers at demos.

Not even if it's a really big nose? I think people with really big noses should be disenfranchised to be honest. Sick of it.

Still not entirely sure whether this is a good or bad thing when people say it

let's cut to the chase-it's an easy symbol for both sets of people with more extreme views to use as a stick to bang their drum. To be honest anti-islamists use it as a symbol as do the slightly more extreme muslims. to be fair it looks ridiculous and it annoys me because i like to see if a bird i'm looking at is tidy or not. it seems that moderate islamic folk don't really see the need for it.

can see both sides of the coin on this.

how about they keep there faces covered but cut two holes to reveal there tits would you be happy with that ?

They don't. Nothing in the bible about wearing them.

And yes I would.

Yes.

Some muslim women choose to wear the burqa, so you're imposing your will on them.

Again, if a law is passed making it illegal for women to wear the burqa in public, then where does that leave those you say are oppressed? It either leaves them housebound, or open to prosecution should they leave the house, or open to retribution at home should they be required to remove it.

Some freedom that like.

Shortsighted and ill-conceived, like most reactionary rightwing ideas.

Well, since there is no means proposed to assess the success or failure of this policy how would they know anyway?

As if it's about that anyway man. Absolute sophistry.

Do you think passing the Law will make the more hardline Muslim community turn around and say "Ah well, burqas off lasses..."?

listen to yourself will ya

so whats the alternative, the burkha is about subjugating women nowt else, reducing them to the status of property

in time the muslim community will see that is not welcome

tits usually, no, just me then

nobody wants to see a great pair of charlies attached to a rotter. i digress. i was trying to use a slightly more out there approach to highlight my feelings. i don't not like seeing someone's face. that's my opinion. my point would be where do you draw the line. should i take off my motorcycle helmet when i go to pay for petrol because my dad says i should keep it on for safety reasons? should i, if it's cold remove my balaclava to enter my bank? i using deliberately silly examples to highlight the absurdity of it all. if people didn't kick up a stink there wouldn't be this hullabaloo.

I wholly understand what you're saying, but can you not see what kind of implications this law's going to have on the women, even in the short term? Never mind the racial tension that it'll increase.

Well yer kna what I mean.

It's a bullshit rightwing crowdpleaser. Tantamount to lawful legislation being filed on the back of a text message poll in the The Sun.

To use a similarly silly example to highlight the other point of view, should we ban curtains and blinds for reasons of security and openness?
