France bans the Burka

Except I've presented both sides of the argument perfectly legitimately, as have others...

Banning the burka isn't going to liberate women from an oppressive muslim society. More meddling where its not wanted from an over involved government.

im not talking about you ;)

Nor does the people who usually rail against the PC Brigade and Nanny State supporting a very PC and Nanny State measure.

"Oooh, you can't wear that in case it offends the white people! Best ban it!"

i agree

just enjoy seeing LM sticking to his line;)

It's got sod all to do with political correctness really.

It's about banning wearing things that completely cover your face in public.

It isn't. If it's a security measure, then it's a comically impotent one.

It's a measure to appease the burgeoning right in France who see the burqa / niqab as a symbol of scary multiculturalism. It's Sarcozy's attempt to woo those who aren't quite at the stage of voting for the likes of Le Pen.

In other words, it's a token to pacify those who get offended by Islamic dress. Very much like meddlesome idiot councils banning nursery rhymes to avoid offending other (largely imagined) idiots.

you believe its targeted at an individual group because it suits your argument

same thing

But it clearly has been targeted at a specific group. What other group of people go around dressed with their faces covered? Why has this not become an issue earlier if its so pressing that it requires an outright ban to be imposed?

If that's the motive behind the banning then it's more than dubious.

But you say it's a symbol of multi-culturalism. Is it shite. It's a symbol of stone-age principles that have no place in Western Society.

You really can't say anything against Muslims at all can you without being labelled a bigot. It's pathetic.

And Santa.

The French have banned Christmas.

Il est devenu fou PC! Nous allons en enfer dans une charrette à bras! Vous ne pouviez pas constitué!

Why does it upset you though? There are bodies and laws in place to protect Muslim women if they feel threatened or coerced. This law will have zero impact on their maltreatment or otherwise, and for Muslim women who want to wear this dress, they are having their rights impinged.

And for why? Cos some people don't like it? Or feel scared by it? Well, many more people feel threatened by drunk white men, so shall we ban public drinking?

Right then, if we're talking about a ban based on "principles", lets get rid of nuns' habits as well. They belong in the past and are designed to cover a woman for the same reason as traditional muslim dress.

We should ban St George's Day.

Cos it's shit.

Different kettle of fish altogether.

Becoming a nun is a fully voluntary act.

And also they don't cover the face, but never mind you stick with it anyway.
