Without any prompting from SMB, the nipper has decided to format her external HDD destroying almost a terrabyte of movies and Simpsons epidoses in the process.

Can anyone recommend any free software for rebuilding the partition table, etc?

Windows should beable to do it under Administrative Tools / Computer Management / Storage / Disk Management.

She's deleted your porn hasn't she

Do you have Windows 7 installed? if so go where the files are missing from and right click then go into properties then click '' previous versions ''

Someone told me that on here the other day when I mistakenly deleted something and I managed to retrieve it, not sure if it'll work if its been formatted though but its worth a try.

Probably not on an external HDD. Win7 saves restore points automatically unlike previous versions so you can go back incase it goes tits up - an external HDD is probably all lost. But if you walked in and it was halfway through formatting and you've pulled it out chances are it's corrupted, so you'll have to reformat again to use it. Plug it in, it should appear in your "computer" section, right click, format.

The format was allowed to complete and there are no issues with the drive; it's perfectly usable. There is software out there that will do the job but it's £70-£80 which I don't want to spend (suppose I could bury it in the C2C costs under sundries).

Serves you right for being a Pirate.

That 70 quid software btw, I can get it for you for a tenner.

Download a copy of Easeus Data Recovery.

Just tried "Partition Recovery" which failed (there is a new partition on there which it recognised and thus thought that all was well)

The free version of DataRecovery only allows you to recover 1Gb which will give me a single VOB from an arbitrary movie. I've got about 800+ gig of stuff to recover.

Thanks anyway though, it was worth a shot.

A friend at work shelled out some money a while back on some recovery software and he reckons "it's the dog's bollocks" so I'll see if he can help.
