Footballers are pricks

I wouldnt worry about the Olympic Football team mate; no way were they the best the UK had to offer.

And its not a "proper" Olympic sport, along with many others.

And our WC team in '70 was actually a stronger team than in '66 and we looked a good bet in '90 ;), but I take your general point.

Don't allow history and what actually happened get in the way of the argument.
We have always been shite at football, but we are topper at cycling and sailing boats and other really important sports, like jumping a long way.
Our footballers just want to have gangbangs, burn 50 pound notes and swear at small children, whilst Our Olympians are out saving terrified babies from house fires, helping little old woman across the road, and visiting hospitals, that's when they are not training 25 hours a day.

This is the best post on this thread.

A thread posted on 'pure FOOTBALL' slating the game. It would interesting to see how interested the bandwagon era are at a nothing athletics meeting in 18 months time.

They won't be at that athletics meeting though, they'll be at the match moaning that we haven't broken the bank for a striker and paid him what he wants after we've lost to Stoke 2-1 at their place.

If you don't like it, don't go. Simple.

If I had the talent and could be a footballer I'd be taking it in while I could. That goes for everyone who goes to work too, everyone wants to earn the most they can.

People get a bee in the bonnet about footballers earning so much, but they're at the top of the tree whether you like it or not. They don't owe anybody anything in afraid. This is capitalism, everyone loves it when they're at the top of the tree but they don't when they're near the bottom.

I also doubt Ennis and Farah are slumming it in a council house. They also chose to compete and dedicate their lives to the sports they compete in, they weren't forced. They want to do it.

Let's not get all romantic because GB have done particularly well this time around, and lose sight of the facts.

Exactly, I don't.

Marginally unfair on footballers tbh, although i agree that the way they go on is embarrassing...... some of them are just scum in fact. BUT

Footballers get a lot more press coverage and there are a lot more of them....... so there is a lot more scope for them to firstly step out of line and act like pricks and secondly when they do it is thrust in our face in the papers.

Also not really comparing like with like..... Jessica Ennis is the one of the best athletes in her sport EVER! So rather than comparing her to Joey Barton, you should be comparing her to Messi, who seems like a decent fella.

Finally...... i guess to prove the point that in any group of people you will get a mix of decent ones and not so decent ones..... Phillips Idowu seems like a prick.

Absolutely right.

I stand suitably rebuked

The lack of passion and effort and pride has never been more obvious when compared with truly outstanding athletes truly giving their all for their nations.

What a bunch of overpaid, overrated egotisitical fuckwits.

My passion for football has dwindled over the last decade.......especially the England team, I honestly don't really give a fuck about them. Actually dislike footballers.......

I only really watch Sunderland and a bit of Spanish footy these days....the whole culture of the modern footballer just boils my piss when I compare them to some sports I like and this Olympics has just consolidated my view.

Mind, there's a massive difference in the fans too. A lot of people go to games to spend 90 minutes facing the away fans, hurling abuse. When some fans applauded a great sporting act from a rival player (Henry), there was a week long inquest about it on here.

Sick of football in general.

I found that very depressing. As a kid my dad and granddad used to tell me that there's nothing wrong with appreciating good skill and sportsmanship, even from a rival, as I can be a fan of the sport as well as my club. But to some it seems like doing so is a traitorous act.

Compare Sturridge and some of his ilk to those 2 lads who came second in the rowing.....

That for me was genuine, those 2 lads had put 4 years into that and we're truly gutted, not just for themselves but there support and family. Nothing pre-fabricated' nothing fake, genuine heart brake for the right reasons.

A world apart from the selfish culture. See in football, me me f***ing me.

You can't compare them as they don't hold up as a comparison.

It's all relative from sport to sport.

It would be interesting to see how these other sportsmen would react if they were followed all day, every day in the build up to the Olympics for four years.

Every race built up, broadcast live, analysed by 5 TV channels, repeated 3 times a week in highlights, every national paper discussing it on the back pages.

Then having you personal and private life analysed during your down time.

Criticised for every mistake, put on a pedestal at any slight success.

Don't forget how good we are at sarcasm.....

Agree mate, but it's us and the media (SKY) who've made them like this, if they didn't get paid so muchand awarded special status by the 'Fans' they'd come down to earth and realise they are the same as me and you. The difference lies in the skill sets we have - they are born with theirs, we have to learn ours.

They need taking down a peg or two on a massive scale - arrogant twats.
Mind you the Koreans, Japanese etc seemed to have a different attitude, not as full of their own self importance.

I moved my season ticket money to the golf course at the end of our last season in the championship and never looked back. I couldn't bear chucking my money at watching overpaid players under performing any longer. Take that to today when you see clubs going bust because of high wages and expectations it's a worrying time.

Football is one of a few sports where top players are financially rewarded irrespective of how they perform every week. Going back to golf, if a pro misses the cut he doesn't get anything at all.

I still go to a couple of games a season but that's more than enough for me these days.

We'll start to see a change in the next five years if sense overtakes greed as the premier league with its present money distribution system will not be able to compete with the likes of Spain where most of the tv money goes to top clubs. By this time the benefits of the mls wage cap system will start to look attractive to lots of countries.
