Footballers are pricks

Yet you're posting on a football forum not rowing one.

Playing football-which I do-is quite abit different from the game at the top level. And if I supported Sunderland because of the football I would have stopped a long time ago.

OP was spot on here! Football has totally lost its way!!! I have watched the passion and comittment of the athletes in the olympics and realised what a bunch of overpaid pathetic wankers we support!!

The lack of passion and effort and pride has never been more obvious when compared with truly outstanding athletes truly giving their all for their nations.

What a bunch of overpaid, overrated egotisitical fuckwits.

Could not agree more!

This Olympics has really got hold of me even more than previous years. Inspirational displays from all the athletes involved. I'm not ashamed to say that it's choked me up a few times!

Makes you sick when you compare them to the overpaid wanker footballers! And that's coming from someone who loves football!

Well done Team GB - Inspirational!!

Best thread I've read on this board for ages! These athletes are doing it for pride and love of sport which makes it quite apt that the footballers couldn't find it in themselves when there isn't a big fat cheque at the end of it!

Absolutely!

Top, top post by the OP

The only way to change it is to stop buying "the product".
Not likely to happen anytime soon is it?

I think you'll find there are some fairly hefty cheques waiting for Wiggins, Ennis, Farah, etc.

Professional sport (and these olympians are all professionals) is all about money, in the same way as professional football is.

If you point is that the athletes compete with a lot more dignity, then I would totally agree with you.

disagree there like, obviously they know they get money for doing it but they work that hard for the medals and medals only id say

I'm only 28 and even I see a huge difference in the way the games changed since I started watching it. God knows how the older poster feel about it who watched through the 70's and 80's. It's absolutely sole destroying to watch these overpaid, over hyped toss pots ruin the game I love.

I'm probably just talking in the moment after watching that shite, but football is becoming less and less important to me as time passes.... no doubt until the new season starts

To paraphrase Barry Davies:
Where were the footballers? And quite frankly, who cares?

Exactly. Apparently Mo Farah trains by running 120 miles a week. That's roughly 5 marathons a week, every week. And he must get paid a tiny fraction of what a premiership footballer earns (although hopefully that'll change a bit now).

Imagine how good our footballers could be, if they could show that level of determination and self-sacrifice...instead of the indulged, pampered lifestyles they all seem to lead.

The game changed in 1992 with the premiership and got much worse with the CL. Money and the influx of so many foreign players have destroyed the beautiful game. It has been an inspiration to see athletes in the Olympics showing such pride and dignity!

He does it because he loves it though.....same as i love putting my trainers on and running or getting out on my bike. It's nothing to do with the money.....it's an inbuilt drive to be the best you can.

Before people get too carried away we have a number of drugs cheats in the squad (Chambers and Millar) and Hindes the track cyclist deliberately came off his bike to force a restart after starting poorly.....however i do agree that the will to win, pride and humility shown by our athletes has contrasted sharply with the spitting, snarling and illiterate behaviour displayed by some of our footballers. To think that an oaf like Barton is probably richer than any athlete representing team GB at these Olympics.

100% agree, though those who are regular Olympic watchers have known this for years.

We were discussing this same thing last night, a lot of the overpaid tosses didn't even think it was worth turning up for the olympics. When you listen to Ennis and Wiggins then think about Rooney and Terry the comparison is stark. But it's us the fans who put up with it and demand we pay them and treat them like we do. The only real top player who shows any sort of olympic spirit is beckham I remember the Greece game and how he gave everything for his country.

Kind of highlights the irony of him being left out.

Those 2 rowers who got silver behind the Danes. Just watched the interview with Inverdale, very moving. Last Sunderland player I saw crying was Martin Scott, I loved Scotty.

I go to the match for a few drinks and to catch up with mates - I think a lot of us do - have no respect for 99% of footballers and wouldnt blink an eyelid if I saw them in the street

This, but nobody really bothers anymore now with us, there are cheaper alternatives to catching up.

totally agree with the sentiment.
Premiership players are obscenely overpaid, under achieving, ignorant, crude, badly behaved, poor sportsmen and very poor role models for up and coming youngsters,
The countries olympian's are far and away better sportsmen than whinging greedy footballers.
Footballers in the past always had an affinity to the working man/woman.
not any more.
Most though not all come over as unpleasant thugs ,bullies, cheats and nasty human beings

Great post mate and a great thread too. I'm struggling to find any reasons at all to stay in love with football.
