Footballers are pricks

Good post. Footballers are role models for young kids but all young kids see is footballers swearing at each other, cheating their fellow professionals and getting into scrapes off the field. This last week we've seen some inspirational stuff from a set of hardworking and humble people and its really putting things into perspective.

Footballers should be role models it is true but my kids have never said to me they want to be a footballer like ..... (even though they love playing) but my 3 year old is watching the Olympics (worryingly he likes the weight lifting) my 6 year old has decided when he gets older he wants to be in the Olympics but given the number of sports he wants to compete in ...
They want to go outside and play handball after seeing it for the first time ever not to mention swimming rowing and volleyball

The only down side is my 6 year old has now asked me if I'll get him some horse riding lessons and a horse. Lol fooking Olympics it would cost me a fortune. I had to tell him only rich people can do that and asked him if he can swim instead.

Great though and oven the reaction of my kids all I can say is it is inspiring and is leaving a legacy.

Euro 2004 and one of the excuses Eriksson gave for our exit was tiredness :eek::eek:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/euro_2004/england/3840861.stm

These guys are paid a fortune and are supposed to be professionals so how can they not be fit enough to perform through a tournament when some of these olympians have other full time jobs and are at the peak of physical fitness? Fair enough I could have accepted that we were not as skilled as the other team but I can't accept the reason that we were too tired and not fit enough!

They say that there are too many football games but other sports schedules are just as demanding - look at tennis for example. And other athletes train a lot harder and for much longer.

Gave up on football a good few years back it's just the love of my club that keeps me att he'd to the game can't be arsed with watching sky games anymore and only watch the odd games compared to a few year back I'd watch any game I could.

It started when watching the TdF watching riders zoning off bikes at 30 mph then getting back on and completing the rest of a stage then seeing a footballer roll around after a tap on the ankle, f***ing pathetic IMO.

And it's our hard earned money that funds their ridiculous lifestyles. Footballing role models are few and far between. Kompany at Man City seems a top bloke but he sticks out as there are so many arseholes in football.

Main reason I jacked my season ticket in a couple of years ago

to put even more perspective on this. The family of one of NZ's gold medalists in the rowing pairs had to mortgage their house to help fund him to the olympics:eek:
The NZ government gives every gold medalist 50K as a reward.

Been propely chuffed for NZ, I've holidayed in the South Isalnd twice in the last three years and fallen in love with the place, delighted to see them doing well. Out of interest is there much in the media on Aussie's failure so far, and GB's sucsess? Or is that not on the agenda?

Agree with so much of what has been said already.

When you watch the performances at the Olympics then listen to their interviews you realise what poor sportsmen professional footballers have become over the years: thick, spoilt, ungracious, ungrateful, greedy, lazy, grasping, disloyal, petulant, bad tempered, undeserving of our attention.

Funnily enough , there was an item on the news last night. At present little old NZ had more gold's than Aussie. The Aussie media highlighted how you could get 3-1 on NZ not getting a single gold on the Aussie TAB:lol:
Aussie's were also complaing about everthing under ths sun as to why their swimmers were doing no good.
Great sporting nation Aus but having a mare at these games, Still plenty of time for them yet.
One Aussie commentator even suggested NZ becoming a state of Aus and adding the medals together . Aussie would clime up to 8th apparently:lol:

Being saying this all week, the effort these sports people put in, then you watch these prima donna footballers without a tenth of the skill\balls of the Olympians rolling all over duffing tackles thinking they're the bees knees is pathetic

Thing is though, football is fundamentally the best and most exciting sport. So even though it's refreshing to see the humility, patriotism and excitement in these other sports which don't receive as much media attention, within a year, they will be forgotten and the whole sporting world will revolve around football again.

agree, and in general you are right, but i definitely think some will put things into perspective and will question there loyalty to football, and there could be a few others following suit and not renewing season tickets

That's definitely true but I think that the money lost from season ticket sales will be more than made up by the growing foeign interest. For example, Real Madrid played a few games at around 11am last year, which is unheard of in Spain, so it could be watched in South East Asia, and the viewing figures were incredible. It's sad that money is absolutely controlling the state of the game but these foreign 'fans' don't care at all about loyalty or humility so it will continue to be by far the most lucrative worldwide sport and its popularity will continue to grow.

Bit of a stupid statement to make. You can never prove anything like that. Far more people in GB just enjoyed the Heptathlon, 10000m and the like than they have ever enjoyed football.

I love most sports, could never suggets that one is better and most exciting.

No it isn't.

For one week of their lives. I'm sorry but there's a reason that football is by far the most popular sport in this country and globally.

Popular isn't what you said. You said it was the best and most exciting. The two aren't the same. Is X factor the best and most exciting tv programme?

What is the level of fitness/athleticism like in football nowadays?

Swimmers, cyclists, runners have significantly more demanding training and diet regimes than a footballer don't they? They're certainly not allowed to drink and train many more hours a day and for more days of the year. What I understood at least.

And I doubt they go out on the piss between the heats and finals.

Agreed.

Compare them to the bloke who had to be helped out of his boat after winning silver in the rowing; he was dead on his feet. Could barely even speak and when he did he just said how he'd let everyone down, was heartbreaking.

This.

They could not have done anymore and the footballers piss off with a whimper.

Unsurprising really.
