Footballers are pricks

totally agree with the sentiment.
Premiership players are obscenely overpaid, under achieving, ignorant, crude, badly behaved, poor sportsmen and very poor role models for up and coming youngsters,
The countries olympian's are far and away better sportsmen than whinging greedy footballers.
Footballers in the past always had an affinity to the working man/woman.
not any more.
Most though not all come over as unpleasant thugs ,bullies, cheats and nasty human beings

There are some exceptions out there, lets not tar them with the same brush. However, i agree with you on the whole. I heard someone on radio today saying a similar thing. The footballers need to take a leaf out of their book and get real!!

What is the level of fitness/athleticism like in football nowadays?

Swimmers, cyclists, runners have significantly more demanding training and diet regimes than a footballer don't they? They're certainly not allowed to drink and train many more hours a day and for more days of the year. What I understood at least.

When someone went to console Sturridge he brushed him away - upset yes, but footballers need to relearn some humility.

Bang on.

The other athletes who've dedicated their lives to competing in these games put the over-hyped, over-rated, over-paid footballers to shame.

Not really a pop at Sturridge in particular as anyone can miss a pen but more the footballers in general. They need a reality check.

And it's our hard earned money that funds their ridiculous lifestyles. Footballing role models are few and far between. Kompany at Man City seems a top bloke but he sticks out as there are so many arseholes in football.

Exactly. I keep thinking about Carroll and Suarez last season - compare their antics last season to the two rowers crying cos they thought they'd let people down by only getting a silver!

The lack of passion and effort and pride has never been more obvious when compared with truly outstanding athletes truly giving their all for their nations.

What a bunch of overpaid, overrated egotisitical fuckwits.

No longer the working man's game as has been said time and time again.

Kids picking up 50k a week?

Fuckoff man

Don't remember an english player playing with all his heart since Gazza. Maybe Beckham loves his country but Gazza would have done anything to get that England shirt on

Because they have a huge gain for lack of success, not actually achieving anything. They also have a governing body that categorically refuses to acknowledge cheating at any level, whether its diving, feigning injury or trying to cripple an opponent.

We'll still pitch up & want Sunderland to win, but it lacks purity...

This.

I've had a few people looking at home and pretty much say the same. Whereas you feel sorry for the real olympians when they cry after losing because they, by and large, have put their heart and soul into it.

I don't know much about team GB, but I imagine they're like team Ireland where we have lads in the boxing who are also teachers etc. It's not an olympic sport, but I train with european champion kickboxers who are working on building sites all day, and train afterwards.

We're all still going to support these guys, but it's rare that I feel I can relate to them.

I am really finding it fascinating. The olympic spirit seems to have been taken onboard by everyone. Human endeavour and effort and our athletes are exceeding all expectations. Even when they don't succeed, we acknowledge their hard work and best efforts. Football - under perform but there is no patience, tolerance or good will (and not saying we should have any).

It may just be a case of no expectations and not the same emotional attachment that means we are more willing to support theathletes. Although, I would say that the British athletes have come across, on the whole, as humble, honest, passionate, open and just good lads and lasses. Footballers do come across as petulant tits.

Still, I think we get the footballers we deserve. Its when people like Tevez moan and run home crying when they're on a quarter of a million a week or Ronaldo calling himself a slave because United won't sell him or Rooney threatening to walk out on Utd until they increase his wages and then saying how he loves Utd again that just makes your mind boggle.

Take Wayne Rooney, paid over 10 million a year and is always at least a stone or two overweight because basically he eats a shit diet and doesnt train hard enough, then acts like prick everytime you see him on the pitch. I can see people turning away from football with pricks like him earning money like that.

Pleased I'm not the only one thinking this. I was saying the same thing at work yesterday.

When you look at our athletes and the sacrifices they make in many cases for little or no money for their sport to make us all proud and give us all a lift it makes the overpaid footballers an embarrassment.

Also the cheating, diving, moaning, attitude to their sport and fellow players in football has really spoilt the game in the last several years and it seems to me to be getting worse and is a real turn off to the game.

Contrast that with the attitude and respect the athletes in the other Olympic sports hold for each other. Even the boxing I watched yesterday when our gb guy won in a shock against the world champion. The respect they had for each other was amazing. The guy he beat even stood at the side of the ring afterwards and held the ropes for our guy to exit the ring victorious.
The spirit, the dedication, the effort and the excitement in the olympics has been wonderful and truly inspiring. To be honest I haven't even watched the football as I'm not interested in letting them brig the spirit down.

Then even when some sportsmanship and bad form does take place in the badminton the authorities show some balls and take the ultimate action. The football governing bodies should be watching and hanging their heads in shame for the lack of balls they continue to show.

I'm so caught up in Olympic feaver it is untrue. I am so loving it eve more than I thought I would.

Sturridge in particular is a massive wanker though.

Good post. Footballers are role models for young kids but all young kids see is footballers swearing at each other, cheating their fellow professionals and getting into scrapes off the field. This last week we've seen some inspirational stuff from a set of hardworking and humble people and its really putting things into perspective.
